    Ah, the sad case of

    John Crouch

    – could have been a great jockey, and already had a Royal Retainer to ride the King’s horses, but his plane crashed in a fog and he was killed in 1939 in his mid-twenties (I think).

Born in Deptford, not very far from

    Pinza

    ‘s London mansion.

    Peter Crouch’s grandfather perhaps?!

    Colin

Would it might be so! Poignantly, his plane crash happened a few days before he was due to be married.

I believe they were. Messrs Tilbrook and Difford are such talented gits, I wouldn’t put it past ’em to be able to ride horses as well.

Was searching the internet a few days ago before seeing this thread for information on John Crouch and came across the following link – hope I’ve copied it correctly.

Apropos of nothing other than ‘Crouch’ being a fitting surname for a jockey reminded me of the even better-named Paul Croucher: a jockey of yesteryear who if memory serves was killed in a car crash

Jack Crouch was my great uncle he was my grandad Ernie’s brother , i have many pictures signed by Jack and a picture of Jacks grave with a note from the king. He still has too surviving siblings . One brother Jim in Australia aged 101 and Rose in Brockley who is a 100. They also found a book near Jack’s body called the forbidden journey how ironic.

    Thank you

    Benmill

    – extraordinary to hear that two of the jockey’s siblings are still with us. Such links with the past…

Jack Crouch was my grandad Frank’s brother. My dad, also Frank Crouch, was brought up in Deptford and was a National Hunt jockey until 1961 when an accident at a racecourse finished his career. My nan kept lots of newspaper cuttings from his racing days and one story that particularly stood out was a horse called Dark Spur. In 1957 Dad was racing at Windsor and after being unseated at a hurdle the horse ran off into the Thames and drowned. Dad was also an extra in several films including Gorgo, Day of the Triffids & Ben Hur. After his accident he opened a coffee bar in Walton on Thames called the "Odds On". Somehow i need to make contact with another contributor on this page – Ben – as we are long lost relations!!

Hi Ben. We must be 2nd cousins! Jack was my grandad Frank’s brother. My dad was also Frank Crouch, born and bred in Deptford, a National Hunt jockey until an accident ended his career in 1961. …how interesting that two long lost relatives have appeared on the same thread, I do hope you both find each other.

Have you tried sending Ben a personal message? sometimes people get an email to alert them that they have received one….

perhaps you’ve already done this…. very best wishes…

There was a jockey riding at around the same time as Frank Crouch (Junior), his name was Peter Michael Crouch… Does anyone know if they were brothers?

They were definitely not brothers. Frank Crouch was an only child.
