I still love those sorts of shop, even though they are few and far between these days, with all the different nails and screws and washers. I went back to a shop recently that I hadn’t visited for years, to buy one of those plastic things that you put on the top of milk bottles to stop the milk sloshing all over your fridge..I’d bought one from him years and years ago, but I knew he’d still sell them.

If you’re ever up in York for the races make a detour for:

    http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/news/audiovi … 3073/read/

just the sort of shop you mean I think

Frankie and Johnny reek of paraffin, and have nails, screws, washers, all sorts of "plastic things" and you name it hidden away in small cardboard boxes

A well-deserved award actually as it’s a jewel of a little shop and they know the ‘hardware’ business inside out

Thanks for the obit. Pompete; he was a nice guy

That shop is just brilliant! I would always pop in there for ‘that can’t find it anywhere else’ item and they always had it. Great place to go, even if it is just to browse. :)

Don’t see house sparrows at all these days, though, although plenty of hedge sparrows

 Never knew one could tell the difference. I’ll have to investigate this one.

fascinating to see nature at work isn’t it, if a little frightening at times. I can’t help but feel sorry for those little things predated upon.

Half-a-dozen years ago when I was living in a garden shed next to Brockwell Park a male sparrowhawk went crashing into a bush, and a wren near by was making birdsong for quite a while afterwards, as if it knew about mortality and cared about the fate of others, and things like that.

House sparrows [male]have a black chest whereas hedge sparrows [dunnocks] are all brown. Very handsome birds, house sparrows imo.

Did you live in a shed? I lived in a shed in King Arthurs Car Park in Tintagel when I worked at Terry Dangers chip shop. It was great; I had a baby belling cooker, a record player

, a bed and a bedside table with a copy of Lord of the Rings on it. I had to use the mens loo at the back of the pub next door which was a bit of a bother, but apart from that it was one of the nicest places I ever lived in. Hardly had to do any housework.

What worries me is that I can’t ever remember washing any clothes..I’m sure I did, at least I hope I did, but I can’t actually remember doing so..but then I can’t remember a lot of things from those years….

Well, I hope anyone so inclined has been busy digging away these past few weeks… so much to do right now…
Are your daffodils all out and blooming like mad? This winter seems to have done them a lot of good.

For racing fans, it might be of interest to note that you can buy the following varieties should it take your fancy:-

    ‘Arkle’

A deep yellow trumpet daffodil of immense size and vigour….
    …sounds about right.

    ‘Desert Orchid’

not quite pure white but close. 3 bulbs will set you back £7.50

    ‘Cheltenham’

yellow with an orange centre. 3 for a fiver. Cheap as chips.

..and for the flat we have,

    ‘Triple Crown’

A golden yellow flower with deep red rim; free-flowering and quick to increase….

    ….how very apt :)

The daffodils round here have begun flowering but are around three weeks later than has been the norm for many years; or infact at the time they should do following what was once regarded as a normal winter

    Always lovely

It’s more like "How does your garden flow" round my place. It has pissed-down here for two days solid (very windy too, and the Forth is as high and choppy as I can ever recall seeing it), and there’s standing water all over the place. No daffs through as yet – much to Mrs Grass’s puzzlement – but all six chilli’s seeds I sowed have now germinated, and will be punted into the greenhouse as soon as the weather turns a bit better.

The shed (or ‘Grasshopper’s Saloon’ as I like to call it), I can happily report remains about 86% watertight, and the rain that

    is

getting through, is doing a nice job of cleaning-up the chalk on the dartboard doors.

    Bring it on, Gaia.

…let us hope you will not soon be sunk without trace…

6 chili seeds, my you’re doing well. I’ve only got 3 so far from a rather expensive Italian seed mix.
At this time of year I recommend, for the greenhouse, a pot of Hyacinths. Mine are just flowering – a variety called ‘Woodstock’ – deep purple, and they scent the whole space.

Impress your wives and girlfriends with such delights and all manner of goodies might come your way :)

    …good Cheltenham ‘hopper?

    Moved here 1st May.

Only realised last week, when it started flowering, that the bush in the front garden is a forsythia.

No, Margaret – it was a fecking blood-bath.

The hyacinth tip is noted. However, you should know that there is a strict horticultural heirarchy at Grasshopper Towers, and the wife might consider it stepping beyond the boundaries of my authority, should I start doing something as radical as buying a plant under my own steam. That said, I shall take your advice, on the off-chance that it scores me some cheap brownie-points.

Rest assured, I will let you know the outcome of this insurgent activity (it’s 1/6 I get banned from the greenhouse).
