Horse form , trainer and jockey , and race distance , all in that order . The caveat being the ground conditions . Most important factor and one that should never be overlooked . No matter how much the stars align , unless the ground conditions are favourable to said horse of my choice , then it’s no bet .

When it all comes together , e.g. Ten Sovereigns at Newmarket last Saturday , time to lump on , which I duly did .

I take the form of trainer, jockey and horse into consideration but have made two bets in the last two days where jockey form has been questionable – both times I’ve been stung.

Jamie Bargary has an appalling record at Warwick but I quite fancied his mount in the hurdle there yesterday. Topofthecotswolds is one to follow, particularly when ridden by a better jockey.

Today it was Derek Fox on Arizona Bound at Hexham and it’s one of the worse rides I’ve seen in some time; motionless on the final circuit whilst the leaders are going for home down the back, then stays on for second far too late.

If the horse was running on merit then it should have won. If it was being schooled for another race then job done.
