Three of Darren Mercers mentioned,Draborgie,Escartefigue and Kadou Nonantais! J,j O-Neill trained one that ran in the Welsh National,he too dissapointed for Darren!
January 27, 2010 at 14:18 #272352If you mean Joss Naylor, surely Mercer would have been more disappointed if he had run in the Welsh National?

Well played Smithy,i meant the Hennessey! His career was short lived!
January 27, 2010 at 15:19 #272362Rendon’s Grace – no fault of his own since he was killed on the track but I thought he really would be top notch
January 27, 2010 at 15:27 #272368Cloudy Grey. Smart in bumpers and smashed up Le Passing on his hurdling debut in a novice at Ascot. Sadly injured after that and was never the same again.
January 27, 2010 at 17:21 #272384There was another Mercer owned horse who was a big noise going into the festival one year. He was called Banjo and was one of these precocious French chasers. He ran in the Sun Alliance Chase of his year in a much hyped clash with the big Irish novice of the time – Harcon. Both got thumped by a mare called Brief Gale in Philip Hide’s finest hour – happy days !
January 28, 2010 at 09:41 #272500Cappa Bleu to be honest
Maybe a bit early to write that one off yet, but then I would say that, wouldn’t I. He looks in need of a confidence booster, and I wish Evan Williams was a good enough student of the racing programme to find the gelding something like a 3m graduation chase to get him back on an even keel.

January 28, 2010 at 11:16 #272514Winker Watson for me.
World at his feet as a two year old, but just didn’t train on.
January 28, 2010 at 12:02 #272522Winker Watson received plenty of positive spin. Looking back at his 2yo form, it wasn’t actually any good was it?
January 28, 2010 at 13:18 #272529Seems rather embarassing looking back to that Norfolk and admitting I backed Bespoke Boy.
January 28, 2010 at 18:12 #272563Killer Instinct……all fart, no s**t!
January 28, 2010 at 19:55 #272583I thought all the following, after such promising starts, would reach the top over jumps;
Mephisto
Arcalis
Chivalry
No Refuge
Tidal Bay
Red Moloney
Diamond SalWonder what happened and if they have anything in common?

There’s another thread somewhere discussing the failures of Howard Johnstons big money buys.
The one I really doin’t get is On Raglan Road…the animal beat Dunguib for G**’s SakeJanuary 28, 2010 at 20:25 #272593See The Stars.
Promising 3yo, could have been top class as an older horse.January 28, 2010 at 20:27 #272595On Raglan Road I’m sure got a bad injury when falling at Aintree (I think). He was disappointing over hurdles, it has to be said, but would have made for an interesting novice chaser.
Mephisto is a great shout, though my old pal Ambobo is probably a better one (though he did at least go on to land a decent handicap chase).
