Or very good, but failed to deliver the goods/or have failed to deliver so far in their career, at the top.
For me –
Chombawomba
was always impressed when i saw her run in the early parts of her career, and then when she finished first in an Ascot hurdle when beating Crack Away Jack, thought she may press on from there.
Breedsbreeze
I remember when he beat Deep Purple and Calgary Bay round Sandown over 2 miles i think it was, and i remember thinking that he may go on to be a very good horse. I guess he has had some form of problem, as he hasn’t been seen on the track for a while.
Black Jacari
Thought this horse would do a lot better than he did last season, a very quirky horse and has his own ideas about the game, thought he may emulate Katchit and win the Triumph at the festival, but has never even made it to Cheltenham.
What horses did/do you think would be ‘very good’, but didnt quite meet their expectations.
January 25, 2010 at 11:56 #271987Last season I (and many others) noted four Irish 6-Y-Olds that all looked destined for the very top of the NH tree and would probably miss each other for at least one season
Unfortunately injuries and/or training setbacks mean three of the four have only managed one very inconclusive run between them
The other however seems to ready to claim his place in NH history
The horses? In alphabetic order
AN SIORRAC
DUNGUIB
HURRICANE FLY
MIKEL DE HAUGENETThis is why I don’t bet Ante Post
January 25, 2010 at 12:47 #271998In all my years,i can say quite categorically that the biggest dissapointment to me was the demise of My way de Solzen"! He won a World hurdle and an Arkle and was destined to be a Gold Cup horse,he looked magnificent, had a proud head carriage and jumped like a stag!He subsequently fell off the top of the ladder and completely fell out of love with the game! Very strange to see such a good horse fall from grace so quickly! I am convinced it was all in his head, thats what makes it worse!

Kingscliffe is another that looked a real star in the making but that devloped a head probem although I feel it all went back to straining his back in his first defeat at Haydock. Every now and again he’d decide to run but overall he was a very expensive horse for me
He was one of the very few Ante Post bets I’ve ever had, to win The Gold Cup the year after he won The Foxhunters…didn’t run…. as usual :>(

Yes, it was sad, very sad, the way My Way went from the top of his game, to trailing off at Lingfield, probably my favourite horse of a long time.
I dont think there were many happier than me when he won his Arkle, jumped brilliantly, travelled brilliantly, and kicked off the bend in some style.
It hurts a little more that the horse was close to me and i tend to get attached to those that are, however, he is now enjoying his retirement on his farm and i hope he continues to have a very happy retirement.

Cheltenham,he shouldn"t have been an expensive horse to follow if you had taken the 10/1 about him winning the 05 Betfair Chase!
January 25, 2010 at 14:23 #272016A couple from a few years back now but, Earthmover and Keen Leader.

Keen Leader! What can you say? A big beauty to look at,but he took to fences like i take to those who lack Foresight!

Or maybe it was just the curse of the O’Neill fella (a bit unfair I know, but )

I backed him on the day, 9-1 got if I recall
a 2nd at 16-1 at Punchestown and a 2nd to Kicking King (10-1, 12-1?)in The King George didn’t cover all the losses, Gold Cup, King George, and lesser races he should have won doing hand standsJanuary 25, 2010 at 16:47 #272037I remember thinking Europa looked an absolute machine in his bumpers but although he had a reasonable enough career as a decent handicapper he never quite reached the heights that I hoped for.
January 25, 2010 at 16:51 #272038When Palace Moon routed some top-notch sprint handicappers in March, I thought we had seen the champion sprinter elect. Subsequent events were a bitter disappointment.
January 25, 2010 at 16:58 #272040How could I forget the horse that gave me my by far my biggest ever winning day
Quadco ran away with the Aintree Bumper by 24 lengths at 33-1 the day Mely Moss can second in the National at 50-1
Had them in very large singles and a double if Mely Moss had won I could have retired earlyQuadco was a bitter dissapointment over huirdles considering his bumper form

I remember thinking much the same about Theatrical Moment in his bumpers. Likewise Grecian Groom after watching his debut.
Essentially very disappointing subsequently, both.

January 25, 2010 at 17:12 #272044Trabolgan – Granted Injuries
Black Jack Ketchum – Fell once and seemed to lose interest

Nothing to do with the trainer! Keen leader reminded me of a tractor with 2 flat tyres, trying to plough a field! If ever there was a talking horse who turned out Dumb, its this fellow!
He would have cost you big time if you followed him religiously!I dont think he ever won a race at odds bigger than 6/4!!!!!!January 25, 2010 at 19:20 #272059Not sure about Trabolgan; there could be a mighty Grand National run in him.
