Maybe they weren’t world beaters but they certainly made a mark with me.

Flat – Stanerra, Horage and Rock Hopper.

NH – Reldis, Artifice and Fifty Dollars More.

Anyone else have some old favourites that deserve a special mention?

I’m relatively new to racing but three of the horses that stand out as ones who got me interested are Rince Ri and the ill fated pair Macs Joy and Iktitaf.

Sonny Somers over the jumps, and Belper on the flat.
Neither were world beaters but each were a great story in my eyes.

Good names there Ghost. Stanerra is definitely overlooked, great mare.

I was thinking about Fifty Dollars More yesterday, didnt he win the Mackeson once.

I liked Relkino on the flat and Band was another one.

Aah, the one-eyed Belper who always won at Brighton – that takes me back!

Ghostly grey Bruni winner of the St Leger and third in the King George in the 70s. Another was 78 Dewhurst winner Tromos, trained by Bruce Hobbs and ridden by Kipper Lynch.

I was a fan of Rock Hopper as well, I remember him beating a horse called Mountain Kingdom at Newmarket. He showed a really good turn of foot that day.

    Others that come to mind

    Flat
    Further Flight
    Song Of Sixpence
    Double Dutch
    Travelling Light
    Peter Davies
    Polish Precendent
Zilzal – He was outstanding but he only ran six times so he tends to get forgotten about.

    Jumps
    Montelado
    Brown Windsor
    Man O’Magic
    Blazing Walker
    Muse
    Carobee

I’m sure there’s loads more but I can’t think them at the moment!

    Glint of Gold

remains a favourite ‘bridesmaid’ of mine. Largely forgotten now and somewhat overshadowed in his fine by any standards 3yo season in 1981 by Shergar’s exploits

Won a couple of continental G1s and was second in both the Derby and St Leger. It still irks that he failed to hold off Cut Above in the Leger

Incidentally Joe Mercer’s immaculate (and trademark) hands and heels riding of Cut Above is a pleasure to watch

    Here it is:

    Don’t ask me why. :?

Man O’Magic as mentioned by Arazi; had forgotten all about him. Soft spot for him at the time. Also Rowlandsons Jewels, OH So Risky and Dubacilla. Further Flight was the first ‘flat’ horse that I lost my heart to, and I remember my telly not working one day when he was racing so I invited myself into the house of the only other person in the village

that I knew was interested in racing.

I still cant get my head round Carlingford Castle not going hurdling. If ever a horse was made to go hurdling that was the one for me.

Other favs were a hunter chaser called Clywd late 70’s and sprinter Sharpo

Aah I remember Sharpo with fondness too Ardrossthegreat. As I recall a big chestnut bull of a horse trained by Jeremy Tree

Arazi you beat me to it. Blazing Walker is one of my all time favourite horses. I saw his first race and followed his career closely. The great WA Stephenson used to put cotton wool in the horse’s ears to stop him getting worked up at the races and I remember seeing him in the yard, a nervy type. Yet on course he won big races at 2m4f such as the Melling Chase despite jumping out right as was his wont.
The Peter Pillar yellow and blue colours on a WAS top class horse, my racing heaven.

What became of Sweet Duke? Did something bad happen to him at Ayr because I didn’t hear anything about him afterwards.
