I was looking at another thread when it occurred to me that I had no idea how much it would cost to transport, say 2 horses from Newmarket to Redcar. If I had to make a guess it would be about £250 all in. Is this about right?
The increasing costs of fuel must be a worry for the owner(s) who hasn’t got huge resources.
May 1, 2008 at 12:02 #160917It’s about £1.25 per mile + vat. If you have two horses travelling then obviously you’d only pay a proportion
Newmarket to Redcar is a fair old way. Would be a 500 round mile trip i would have thought so £250 + vat for each horse on two sharing is the absolute minimum.
Dont forget that most yards will also charge you for the lads time who travels with the horse and some will charge you for the trainers travelling time!
Newmarket to Redcar is also pretty close to being an overnight stop as well so you might havwe to factor that in.
May 1, 2008 at 12:04 #160918I think most trainers publish their transport costs on their website (assuming they have one), though I have never taken the time to work out what any one trip might amount to.
Mark Johnston for instance (whose £60 per day basic fee seems a tad high to me) charges 95p per mile per horse in the UK, and 95p per mile per horse plus ferries, flights and tolls if venturing abroad.
May 1, 2008 at 12:08 #160919Just to emphasize how expensive racing is for owners a couple of seasons ago we took the sydicate horse Celeritas to Beverely from John Gallaghers yard in Gloucs (a night meeting so no overnight stop) but a fair old trip
It was a Class 4 Novice Event worth £8k, so not a bad prize
He finished second that night so his prize money allocation was about £1,200 before deductions.
After deductions, travelling, entry fees, jockey fees, VAT etc we LOST money on the day!!
Johnston will have his own box so will be able to do it a bit cheaper than the transport companies but he makes up for it with his fees!
May 1, 2008 at 12:30 #160925The fact that Johnston still has 200 boxes full year on year suggest hiw owners don’t agree that his costs are too high.
May 1, 2008 at 12:34 #160926Andrew Black the Betfair founder with a Sunday Times ‘Rich List’ estimate of £190 million has been quoted £40k to fly one horse from Heathrow to Italy and back.
His Bouguereau may turn up for The Italian Derby with prize money of 1Million euros if he can get another owner to share costs with!
On the same subject John Dunlop used to like his runners to have at least 3 hours after a race before starting the journey back to Arundel so his runners at York or Doncaster for example need two horsebox drivers to drive the one box to comply with the current tachograph laws.
Additional expense I suppose but a drop in the ocean for his main patron.
It makes on think how Sir Mark Prescott ever made it pay with his many raids up to Scottish tracks.

Again on the same subject has anyone seen the horse box owned by Terry Mills reputed to have cost the best part of £100k.

It is possibly my biggest gripe at the moment, it is crippling the economy and will continue to do so until something is finally done about it.

True. They wouldn’t though if a garage down the road was selling the same fuel for 95p.

No need to fly to Italy, go by road for less than a quarter of that. Johnston would never fly there.
May 1, 2008 at 13:14 #160935I don’t imagine you could have a horse in a box for the length of time it would take to drive to Italy, and then expect it to race.

It happens all the time Salselon, as I said it’s Mark Johnston’s prefered mode of transport to there as he believes it’s a waste of money flying. No evidence that it affects performance.
May 1, 2008 at 16:20 #160964Kim Bailey did a break down of travel costs on his daily blog a while ago, to explain how bad it was to get to a racecourse only to find that racing had been cancelled at the last minute; everyone still had to pay.

actual costs ane what owner’s charged can be two completely different things.
How many horses have actually seen the horse box leave in the early hours……..Answer: very few.
How many see them being loaded to come back….: Answer: somewhere between none and a few.
Did the horse get a lift from Joe bloggs up the road or did he have a HB all to himself……..do trainers make a few quid extra from transport here and there?
Use your imagination
May 1, 2008 at 20:54 #161008I would have to speak to Christian to get the total breakdown of what exactly our costs are, but on average, in the box, it costs about £1,000 to bring a horse over to the UK from Germany. As for flying, I wouldn’t be sure – when Christian had a horse running in southern Spain once, the horse was taken over in the box, and stabled overnight somewhere in southern France I believe.
