I was reading through an old article about Kauto Star the other day and it was saying he is on par with Desert Orchid and Moscow Flyer with ratings and I wondered which horses were above them if he carried on improving and after looking on the internet and through some books I cannot seem to find anything about the highest ratings ever given to national hunt horses. The only horse with one was Arkle who had a timeform rating of 212.
Anyone know where I can find any official ratings, timeform ratings or any other form of ratings of national hunt horses throughout history??
Cheers

188 Golden MillerFebruary 12, 2008 at 12:13 #142513So if Denman vs Kauto Star does go ahead and you have the likes of Kicking King and Exotic Dancer, you reckon the winner will need a performance in the bracket of some of the horses listed their??
Didn’t know Arkle was that good
head and shoulders above the horses of today!!February 12, 2008 at 13:02 #142516How on earth did Timeform get 182 for Best Mate??
Think of a number and add a stone imo…
February 12, 2008 at 13:06 #142517Before my time TDK but something along the lines of bare form 174 for the second Gold Cup, with BM, Chives and Valley Henry all given an extra 8 lb, presumably for kicking on too soon.
Of course, said argument lives or dies by whether you think Truckers Tavern was worth 166.

Ditto Kicking King
February 12, 2008 at 13:13 #142521Kicking King for his first King George, in which the first 3 pulled 24 lengths clear of the fourth, bare form 177 then 5 lengths extra to take into account for trying to take the last fence with him and nearly killing Santa Claus!

Fudging figures innit

One assumes right around your time then, DJ.

I can’t have it.
The bare form wasn’t worth 177. Not with it based around a non-staying Azertyuiop and the hound Kingscliff.
IMO, you understand.
February 12, 2008 at 13:28 #142530Just about my time, but the rating/report of that King George was nothing to do with me. I was probably watching the 2.50 at Wolverhampton at the time of the race!. The fact that Azertyuiop was off the bridle before Kicking King that day makes me less inclined to blame stamina than you.
Regarding Kingscliff, as you say a proper hound, but it could be argued he also ran to low/mid-170’s when he won the Betfair Chase.
The ratings are the highest ever achieved in lifetime starts, certainly not exclusive to Gold Cup runs.
