High Definition, the once 4/1 winter favourite for The Derby just won a Leopardstown Novice Hurdle at a BSP of 9.94.

    Racing – what a game.

It was even a very modest maiden hurdle. The hype surrounding newly bought french horses is beyond me.
Of course, when Willie knocks on the door, the price goes up another 200%.

Quite significant that Mrs Magnier has kept High Definition in her sole ownership instead of selling him to JP. She’s had a pretty good eye for a decent NH prospect over the years. I think Theatreworld and Nick Dundee ran in her colours as well.

The Harrington horse is well related through the dam (Jett, Jezki, Jetman etc) so clearly ain’t no slouch. A modest maiden is a bit of an understatement. https://www.racingpost.com/profile/horse/525178/la-noire

Father Jack, the runner-up needed five starts in NHF races to record his first win. I know that they tend to improve for the switch to hurdles. The Fav won a maiden at Craon, but because the Donnelly’s got interested he was sold for a quarter million or so.

The one I fancied was Diverge, just one win in seven Flat starts in France, but against better opposition. The rest was beaten out of sight (5th placed horse 20 lengths behind the winner).

I’m sure HD could improve for the run. No matter how good he’ll be over hurdles, today was the day to back him and he was quite generous with BF (see Ian’s post).

It just goes to show the market isn’t always right – horses can be weak and win.

More than double the odds he’d been for The Derby at one stage on his hurdling debut.

Mrs Magnier also had top class NH runners in Native Upmanship and Rhinestone Cowboy.

That maiden at Craon that Parmenion won has turned out to be moderate. The runner-up cost 82,000 euros at the same sale and is 0/3 for G Elliott. The third won a couple of minor flat handicaps in France this year, the last at Le Mans (not sure if the jockeys have to do a flying mount there).

Amd the 4th is still plying his trade in France, a maiden after 13 races and now running over fences.

Shades of Percussionist, though Percussionist debuted over hurdles at odds of 2/7. Never quite lived up to his potential but he eventually won the Grand National Hurdle in the US.

Mrs Magnier has a bumper debutant at Wetherby today trained by Skelton.

I recall an ex Gosden/ Shadwell horse who was average on the Flat; and after being sent to a certain Aidan O’Brien getting beat the first time out over hurdles…..

……the rest they say, is history.

He seemed to be very one paced at whatever trip they ran him over on the the flat and that trait looks to have carried over to hurdles as well judging by this first run, he went markedly right at a number of hurdles which was a little concerning but hopefully can be ironed out the more experience he gets.

I can she him being much the same over hurdles as he was on the flat (tripless) but it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see him one day rock up in a Stayers Hurdle…….I wonder if they would consider fences if his hurdling career goes the way of his flat one?

Many confuse a one-paced horse with a stayer and I’d agree that’s the hallmark of High Definition.

They sensibly had him up there from the start, I thought he had a good look at one or two of his obstacles and I think missing out the flight in the home straight due to low sun was to his advantage.

He won well enough, but I don’t see him taking high rank over timber and I think he’ll soon meet his match in graded company, then be tried and fail over further, we might even hear the well-worn phrase “he needs a fence, whatever he does over hurdles will be a bonus” and then he will either be gelded or they’ll have a crack at marketing him as that rare thing outside France, a Jumps sire who has actually won over Jumps.

After having watched a 2nd replay of the race I have realized two things:
    1. The horse runs in the Derrick Smith colors, not that this would influence his performance.
    2. He was far from fluent early on and maybe this was reflected in his rather generous SP. The very long run-in helped him a lot and he didn’t quicken like a former Classic horse.

I’m sure he’ll improve for this outing, but the are much better horses out there for the Supreme and also for the Ballymore. He was a good thing on Monday, but that’s it so far.
