Entries now out for this.
Bobs Worth heads the market at the moment, and he looks an obvious favourite. He’s a bit short for me at the moment, but very difficult to be negative about him, and he must have an outstanding chance, ahead of a potentially big season.
Don’t have a great record in this the last few seasons, with State of Play being my last winner. I’m always undecided whether to go for a Gold Cup type, like BW, or a potentially (very) decent handicapper.
Went with the latter. Had a small go last week with Michel Le Bon @ 75’s to 80’s, and also Ikorodu Road @ 80’s to 90’s. Main fancy is Ikorodu, but took MLB in anticipation of a decent show in The Badger Ales. Happy enough with that performance, but in reality, he’ll have to step up to land this.
Ikorodu probably isn’t an obvious candidate, and I don’t even know if it’s a serious target, but more than happy to take a chance. Very progressive last year, but probably in need of a rest when running in Scottish National, where he disappointed. He’d have no chance on that run. Had a spin over hurdles at start of the month, and very much hoping that’s got rid of the cobwebs. Hopefully he’ll take his chance. Took 33’s today as well.
Of the others, could be here all day, but Junior would be of interest, however, I’m hoping he’s kept wrapped up for later in the season. I’ll bet him if he shows up though.
November 14, 2012 at 17:46 #419852I like HOLD ON JULIO i took 10s with Hills i did. will come on a ton for the run from Cheltenham this been his target too.
November 14, 2012 at 18:11 #419863All over Bobs Worth for this, a very worthy favourite and a very decent price imo. Has the pace to beat Cue Card around the course, has the stamina to win going away in the RSA… This will be the start of a big season for him.
November 14, 2012 at 20:18 #419871If the ground’s soft, I’d be tempted to go for Magnanimity each way, he surely has a big race in him. Ran well behind Roi du Mee last month and has a low weight.
MLB was bitterly disappointing in this last year, but his comeback was most encouraging. Also has a nice low weight.
It would be a fairytale if Carruthers managed to retain his title, but he’s rather all or nothing these days and didn’t look interested last time. Too risky for me.
Hold On Julio ran a nice race last time and is still unexposed. He’d be my idea of the winner at this stage.
November 14, 2012 at 23:30 #419900Oh crikey; Magnanimity, my bogey horse from last year. Bound to win at a big price the day I don’t back him. Was never right [supposedly] last year; wish the trainer had told me!
November 22, 2012 at 02:31 #420479Ground a major factor in this race due to the distance. Some of these won’t make it home if it comes up soft.
Duke Of Lucca has a good race in him. Chance here if it’s not too testing. Had my 25’s.
Teaforthree should not see a racecourse til the Welsh National.
November 22, 2012 at 12:52 #420502The Package
is an absolute bet of a lifetime. Is well handicapped, fresh, fit, will have a more than capable jockey (and an in form one too) on his back. Everything. I took 8s, and was planning on raiding Hills for the 10s before Mr Pricewise stepped up. Had to have a big bet on 7s, and that is now drying up.
EW Saver on Fruity O’ Rooney at 33s. Like the form of their Cheltenham race last year.

Hi JJMSports, what evidence is there to suggest that this horse is still well-handicapped? Thanks

I don’t think The Package has the class to be involved. A modest strike rate overall, one win in three years and a beaten favourite seven times in his career are all factors that steer me well clear of him for this race. I think one of the younger horses will win it and I hope it is Bobs Worth, as I have him doubled up with Silviniaco Conti in today’s Betfair.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Nah.
Bet of a lifetime was Dunguib in the Champion Bumper.
November 26, 2012 at 00:45 #420861The Package out to 35/1 on betfair. Looks an unlikely runner.
Value Is EverythingNovember 26, 2012 at 18:42 #420951Bob’s Worth looks like the horse to beat but, to be honest, he doesn’t really excite me, so I’m going to look to get him beat.
At present, and at the prices, why not go for my old mucker Lion Na Bearnai? OK, he’d be the oldest horse for 30 years to have won it, but he’s a bit of a late bloomer, he’ll no doubt get the trip and his Irish National win wasn’t too shabby. He’s got some improvement in him, I’d say, and with the rest of the field bordering on the not-good-enough, I’ll put him down as a pretty good each-way bet.

So don't run, just like the others always do
November 26, 2012 at 22:47 #420971I like Frisco Depot, not far off the top novice form in ireland last year, was going ominously well as ascot when falling at tne second last, receiving a huge chunk of lead from Bobworth……SWC is the only issue…but he’s well in, looks to be in good form and i think he’ll be bang there.
November 26, 2012 at 23:14 #420973Paul Nicholls has done me proud in this race over the years so I have taken a chance that Ruby selects Tidal Bay as this rogue has looked a very good horse again this season and he is guaranteed to run unless injured, sit out the back and pick them up one by one in the home straight (hopefully)

That reminds me of Denman’s performance a few years ago, wow….although I love Tidal Bay, he’s no Denman…
Hold on Julio for me.
November 27, 2012 at 15:01 #420993I’d be keen on
First Lieutenant
if he runs. Trainer Mouse Morriss quoted in The Independant a few days ago as saying "It depends on the ground, and the top ones staying in". Top weight Tidal Bay looks a likely starter, so waiting on the ground. I believe soft would be fine, but jockey once blamed heavy ground when beaten at odds-on. I backed FL in the JN Wine last time out, convinced FL is suited by a test of stamina and this will be the longest trip tackled so far, can improve. I’m not someone who backs horses just because they owe me money. Looks well handicapped, closely matched RSA form with Bobs Worth, yet currently at a much bigger price. That may be because he’s not yet a certain runner and I’ll be waiting until final decs to get involved.
Bobs Worth is a worthy favourite, but hasn’t run on the likely going. Neither sire Bob Back or dam’s sire Kings Theatre’s progeny tend to like a bog. At the West Berkshire Racing Club Season Preview Nicky Henderson said Bob Back wasn’t right for a long time last year and surprised him when winning the RSA. That suggests he’ll be able to improve a good deal this season. Trouble is Bob’s come in to his own in the Spring previous years and that also remains a question mark against his name. Whatever happens on Saturday, I wouldn’t write him off for Cheltenham.
Value Is EverythingNovember 27, 2012 at 15:06 #420994I can’t for the life of me understand why
Quito De La Roque
hasn’t been given an entry in this. Surely 3m 2f on soft ground would suit him down to the ground. His other likely option before Christmas is the John Durkan where he’d likely get a hiding from Flemenstar.
