Pipey talks about Madison De Berlais and his other Hennessy hopefuls.
November 10, 2009 at 14:22 #258127From Post site:
Nicholls delighted with Denman gallop
TRAINER Paul Nicholls was delighted with Denman after the 2008 Gold Cup winner worked at Exeter racecourse on Tuesday.
As part of his preparation for the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury on November 28, Denman was partnered by Ruby Walsh in a gallop with stablemate Beshabar that left Nicholls purring.
"That’s just what he wanted – absolutely perfect," Nicholls told At The Races.
"He always goes better at the track than at home and he’s a different horse to last year, which was dreadful. He wasn’t fit and he’s better when he’s heavier and can work. That was ideal."
Regarding the Hennessy, for which Denman is abest-priced 13-2 with Victor Chandler, the champion trainer added: "He won it two years ago and loves the track – he’s unbeaten there. If he runs up to his Gold Cup form, he’ll be hard to beat."
In inclined to agree; I can just see him murdering them like he did two years ago. He’s such a big horse, I can’t think top weight will make too much difference, and a lot of the others will be running from out of the handicap too in any case….
November 10, 2009 at 17:00 #258132I backed Gone To Lunch at 12/1 to win this race.
November 10, 2009 at 18:04 #258143I backed Gone To Lunch at 12/1 to win this race.
Was 55 on Betfair when I looked yesterday so may be a NR. Good place chance if he runs though

The minute I heard he was running panic set in but I thought stuff it and grabbed the 7/1 about him anway. I say panic because I don’t believe a word PN says.
His bosom buddy Fergie’s horse runs as well and he was touting him as gold Cup horse last year. That worries me big time.
I simply can’t see anything entered that would be a danger to What A Friend who is much better than his Cheltenham run suggests. If PN has worked his magic on him and I’ve backed the wrong one it won’t be the first time.

I can’t have Denman for this – he will be attempting to concede 24lbs to the likes of Gone To Lunch.
I’d be a confident layer at current odds.
I should add to the post above if Denman doesn’t run.
I don’t know about laying Denman, but Gone to Lunch almost always runs well in this type of handicap. Question is, is he better getting weight or giving it. Can’t Buy Time ran in the same race as him and finished in behind but neither of them were, let’s say, knocked about.
Of course like him they have to turn up but if they do I must admit I would be a bit worried.
Looking back to when I backed Denman last time for the Hennessy it was a desperate race. The 2nd was a boat, John Quinn reckoned the 3rd Charachter Building was still a baby back then and it was a year later before the 4th Madison Du Berlais got his act together.
Denman as we know went on from there and I’m banking on him being as good now as he was when he won the Hennessy before….he carries weight very well and I think his 2nd in the Gold cup is better form than his previous win in this. I think he’s a worthy fav.
That 24lbs may worry some but Arkle carried 12s7lbs and gave Stalbridge Colonist 35lbs and was only beaten because Pat Taffe messed up.
I wouldn’t have thought there are many in this as good as Stalbridge Colonist was, so unless Denman is something like 20lbs inferior to what Arkle was I’m home and hosed. Think my confidence just took a big knock 24lbs seems an awful lot…told you I was rubbish at handicaps
November 11, 2009 at 18:11 #258249Haven’t digested these yet, so I don’t have anything to say about the weights handed to the Irish runners. I hadn’t realised Golden Flight had dropped 5 lbs though, so that is a waste of £3, unless he is balloted out instead of scratching.
I typed these out, so there may be an occasional error.

Dear Villez 7November 11, 2009 at 21:22 #258287Have read a couple of people on betfair criticize these.
I was doing a bit of work on the Grand National last night, and it included guesstimating what the Irish horses would get for that (based on existing form).
My guesses are followed by question marks, whilst the ones for the Hennessy don’t have a question mark.
135? 135 Ballytrim
144? 142 Arbor Supreme
136? 137 Pomme Tiepy
155? 154 War Of Attrition
152? 152 Casey JonesIt doesn’t seem to me that there is much to complain about.
I suppose I should have just looked at the Anglo-Irish classifications on the BHA site, but for some reason I didn’t think of that, presumably because Ballytrim was the first on the list.
The one I am worried about for the GN is Garde Champetre, as I guessed 160, but I followed that one by two question marks instead of one.

If the weights for the GN were published tomorrow I dare say Garde Champetre would be rated mid 140s by the handicapper. Certainly no higher than late 140s
November 12, 2009 at 04:53 #258308That’s nice.
He gets in on 148 say, when a case can be made for him having 10 lbs more.
I’ve got Friday booked off as holiday, so I’ll see if I can find something outside of Denman, Carruthers, Killyglen, Casey Jones etc.
Oh, as this post is a diversion, I may as well chuck one in for Rory.

Denman is the chestnut in front, rather than the chestnut behind. I suppose what colour liver chestnut is depends upon whether it is lamb’s, pork or ox.
November 16, 2009 at 12:54 #258928Air Force One ruled out which is a shame, i like the horse and he ran a big race in the same race last year.
November 16, 2009 at 14:09 #258941Is Dream Alliance still in training?
November 16, 2009 at 14:10 #258942Some thoughts about Carruthers.
I doubt that he will run if the ground is good, and although he does not need it to be heavy, it will suit him more than others if it is.
6 and 7 year olds (often second season chasers) have won the race 59%, 8 & 9-y-os 34% 10+ 6%.
C does not need a ‘soft lead’ or to dominate his races. His style of racing is that of an old fashioned chaser: a relentless galloper. He makes the running or is handy for two reasons, which are: to make use of his high cruising speed and to give him a good view of his fences.
Have another look at the RSA chase if you can. I saw him in the paddock before the race and he looked half the size of the other runners and still pretty weak behind the saddle: there is much more to come. As for him going off too fast – I don’t think he went any slower in the Reynoldstown. (Off 10-1 in the Hennessy he is hardly likely to hang about either!). The final placings reflect his (uncharacteristic) blunder at the 3rd last rather than his comprehensive defeat of many named in this thread, to whit: Casey Jones, What a Friend, Siegemaster, The Market Man, Ballyfitz, Gone to Lunch, Lodge Lane, Hold Em and Killyglen.
On the face of it his run in the ‘Badger’ was a little disappointing, until one considers his performance at the weights that technically put him second to The Tother One by 11 lbs – a fair performance given that he needed the race. (Also it’s worth noting that the time of the race was pretty decent).
Totally agree with others here that he has ideal credentials for the Welsh National (provided it is fresh heavy and not Chepstow claggy).
Lastly, good luck to the Denman connections if they think he can give lumps of weight to improving young horses. He ran one decent race last year in between two stinkers. I think that he has his own ideas about the game as any scrutiny of the trainer’s remarks about him will confirm. 11/2 is a mugs price – anybody taking it has started a new religion.
November 16, 2009 at 16:06 #258958Is Dream Alliance still in training?
From RP Stable Tour 19th Oct 09
8g Dream Alliance
In very good order and working as well as ever. I’m delighted we still have him as retirement was on the cards when he cut through his tendon very badly in a hurdle race at Aintree two seasons ago. We could start him off in a handicap hurdle before we go back over fences; he finished second to Denman in the 2007 Hennessy and he’s likely to have an entry again. His chase rating should be dropped a few pounds to take his layoff into account.
Philip HobbsNovember 16, 2009 at 16:11 #258961So pleased to hear that; it was such a fairy tale result when he finished second to Denman. Have been wondering what happened to him. Does he still spend his holidays in an allotment, I wonder?
November 16, 2009 at 18:01 #258983That’ll be good for the rhubarb.
Air Force One
seems to be out, though I haven’t gone looking for the story yet, as I’m busy with the GN.
November 16, 2009 at 22:11 #259030Though i backed Gone To Lunch.Something inside me is telling me that Trafford Lad will run a big race and it is a horse i am thinking of betting on.Any thoughts on Trafford Lad
