Thanks Rory, but I’ve actually got all of those in my spreadsheet already, from the same source.
So your post doesn’t go to waste, I’ll start checking them now.
Gerald
PS, I’ve noticed as a test, you left Kauto off.

He was rated so high, my mouse wouldn’t reach!

You actually made me laugh for once, but that may be my masterplan for this evening kicking in. I’ve started drinking already, so that I can sleep soundly, and then wake up at midnight for the racing from Flemington.
Okay, what I’m trying to do is identify those horses that have had a setback, but no one has said anything yet.
I haven’t started any investigating yet, but I thought I’d just publish the list, and let others fill in the gaps. It may be that a trainer has got several horses and already has 2 or 3 aimed at this race.

Standin ObligationIt may be that a few of the 10yos+ haven’t been bothered to have been entered because people know they don’t have a particularly good record in it.
October 30, 2009 at 18:54 #256268Can’t remember what I read about Surface to Air the other day [or where I read it]. Could it be that he was ready to run again, but then they found a bit of heat in his leg? He’s certainly an interesting one if he is back this year.
October 30, 2009 at 21:37 #256296Surface To Air out for the season, moehat.
October 31, 2009 at 14:31 #256415I have always liked a 2nd season chaser for this and the horse that fits the bill this year is
Carruthers
,just took 15 on the machine. If as expected Denman should run then this fellow will feel as if he has been let loose!
October 31, 2009 at 14:51 #256418Gone to Lunch
153 (10-5) perhaps wouldn’t have the same scope for improvement and may be a bit of a boat but he is another who will stay every yard and is very well suited to Newbury’s big oval track, and could definitely stay on into a place.
Nice Hennessy prep for GFL today. Can’t think of a worse track for him than Ascot so did ell to finish wher he did and stayed on nicely in the straight
October 31, 2009 at 17:32 #256445I think Gone to Lunch is a fantastic horse; had he not had such a torrid time at Cheltenham he would have a much higher profile this season.
October 31, 2009 at 21:22 #256482Gone to Lunch is slow and ain’t good enough. I’ll eat my own head if he wins the Hennessy!!

I don’t think he’ll win it (although I would love to see someone eat their own head so I’ll be cheering him on nevertheless!) but I can definitely imagine him running something like:
"In touch, ridden and outpaced 5 out, rallied from 3 out, finished well, not reach leaders"
. . . he’ll love the track with it’s long straights and could use his bottomless stamina to be a fast finishing (but unthreatening) 3rd or 4th, staying on past beaten rivals. He’ll probably be a 12/1-16/1 shot to win the race which I wouldn’t be overly interested in, but I really like the idea of backing him TBP @ 10/3, 7/2 ish
November 1, 2009 at 07:13 #256517Okay, this is what I’ve gleaned from the RP:-

I’m generally assuming that horses that ran in May are just late back.
Possol was a false alarm. Would I be wrong to automatically assume Grand National if Possol is having a go at hurdles? This is in the context of Possol being at a low price in the betfair GN market, despite his age. Rather creates the impression that someone stable-attached is backing him.
edit:
Wednesday 23rd September 2009
Jaunty Flight has picked up a small injury which will mean she is going to have box rest for a month. It is nothing serious but will rule her out at a possible tilt at the Hennessy.November 1, 2009 at 17:24 #256592I thought Killyglen ran a nice Hennessy prep today. The ground wouldn’t have suited at all (Howard Johnson has always said horse wants decent ground) and the winner (Knockara Beau) might just turn out to be a contender for the Arkle or RSA Chase at the festival. He finished 5th beaten just 10l behind Mikael D’Haugenet in the Ballymore hurdle this year.
November 2, 2009 at 14:23 #256745Casey Jones will win this by a country mile!
November 4, 2009 at 01:24 #257010I have always liked a 2nd season chaser for this and the horse that fits the bill this year is

I’d take on anything with this beast on genuine soft or heavy. The horse travels and jumps out of it better than anything I’ve seen for a long while and was, for me, the stand-out novice chaser last year.
November 5, 2009 at 09:23 #257189Towards the end of last season started to think about this race and Carruthers and Killyglen were the ones who stood o like a sore thumb. Carruthers obviously needs it soft or worse but is monstorously effective on those terms. Killyglen would want g/s or soft and he would be my main bet for it.
So will be looking at betting the pair on a 2-1 ratio
2pts killyglen
1pt CarruthersThink longterm carruthers should go for the welsh national though, off a rating of 149 nothing would get near him, he travels brilliantly and loves the likely ground.
November 5, 2009 at 11:23 #257215I’m a big fan of Carruthers, I backed him in the Reynoldstown and the Rsa, but do you guys not think he also needs a small field and an uncontested lead to be seen athis best
November 5, 2009 at 11:54 #257222I dont think Carruthers is quirky like that THM, I think its more a case that he needs ground conditions that bring his stamina and travelling ability into play. When you look at how he beats horses on soft or heavy ground, they are ran ragged and he is travelling really well. At cheltenham on better ground he is usually travelling well towards the death, but as soon as the tempo is lifted he starts making mistakes and dont think he has the gears for g/s or better (at least not at the sort of trip hes been running at anyways). I think the welsh national is the perfect race for him, and he’s on a cracking rating for it, however, if it were to come up soft at newbury on hennessy day, he’d obviously have a cracking chance.
