June 8, 2011 at 17:17 #359613Whilst not wishing to defend Henderson, it’s worth noting that this particular drug is widely used and regularly produces positive test results, leading to trainers facing the same charges as we see with Henderson.
In recent years Channon, Noseda, Hannon, Makin, Dow, Hales, Rimell and others have been found guilty after positives for dexamethasone. It’s anybodys guess how many other horses have raced with traces of it in their system but not been tested.
So, even allowing for his recent record, a 10 year ban would seem excessive when compared with the fines imposed on those named above.

June 8, 2011 at 17:36 #359616The punishments quoted are the guidelines where the substance has been administered in error or on veterinary advice. Cue the vet taking the rap again.
It’s being quoted as an anti-allergy drug but it sometimes is used systemically as a "performance-enhancing” drug because corticosteroids decrease inflammation, possibly enhance glucose metabolism (there is some debate about this) and may have some mood-elevating properties.
The fact that there was no record of the drug being administered coupled with the RCVS’ finding that Henderson was engaged in a systematic policy of covering up the administration of banned substances certainly tends to give the appearance (whether or not such be the case) that the reason for administering the drug wasn’t entirely innocent.
