    Hi Guys

I am currently trying to organise my mates stag do and, as we are all racing fans we’ve decided to venture forth and go to a meeting somewhere we’ve never been before. Now, as with all these situations, some of us are more into our racing than others so it would ideally be a day that could cater for all tastes.

We’re looking at going between start of July and end of August and I was just wondering if you guys have any opinions or any recommendations.

I’ve looked at King George day, Glorious Goodwood and York on the 25th of Aug so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance, Jonny

    Jonny,

If your mates include ‘music’ fans, there are quite a few meetings that have a concert after racing. Apart from the obvious plus of two events for the price of one, these meetings attract plenty of other people that aren’t necessarily there for the racing, but would be of interest to the members of a stag party.

For example, Newmarket do this on Friday evenings throughout your chosen period, Epsom have racing plus a concert on every Thursday through July, Ascot usually have music after the Shergar Cup meeting in August etc etc.

The days you mention in your post are all fine, but are the most expensive at those tracks and also the most crowded.

Irish Derby meeting is usually too packed to enjoy properly and full of people who are there because it’s an "occasion" IMO

I prefer the Oaks meeting on 11/12 July, again at the Curragh. The problem with the Curragh is you need transport to and from the track – I don’t know what public transport is like TBH.

Bruce Springsteen also plays Dublin that weekend (11/12 July) so the city centre should be fairly good

I’d recommend staying away from Temple Bar (too many drunken British stag parties!) and stay around the pubs just off Grafton Street which are much better

Leopardstown also have 3 x Thursday evening meetings on 9th, 16th, & 23rd July which are usually great craic esp if the weather is good.

    Howya Hector!

I’d say Galway would be a good shout if you’re more interested in the booze than the racing. It’s just an excuse for a pish up rather than a racing festival.

If not, the Curragh can be decent craic. If you’re staying in Dublin I’m pretty sure from memory that there are trains from Heuston Station to Kildare Town with a free shuttle bus from there to the track. I’m not sure if they still use the the old railway siding at the Curragh. I’d agree with David in staying away from Temple Bar. Copper Face Jacks on Harcourt Street is the place to be.

If you are a jumps fan a visit to the new track at Ffos Las could work. Theres plenty of the other in Swansea for afters to try and persuade the groom he is making a mistake. Whats the point in getting married, just buy her a nice house.

Roddy, is it true that Swansea girls only wear knickers to keep their ankles warm?

York’s ‘Showcase Weekend’ may appeal as a last fling for the footloose and fancy-free:

    Music Showcase Weekend

On some days we offer a little extra entertainment which is where Music Showcase Weekend comes in; top quality action on both the track and the live music stage.

Music Showcase Evening is the only evening of York’s year on Friday July 24th combining competitive racing with live music from a top class tribute band. The European Breeder’s Fund Lyric Stakes is Listed contest to reward talented fillies whilst the performers on the stage come with rave reviews.
The live music on Saturday July 25th will follow the racing action and promises to be very entertaining. The artists will be announced shortly.

The Sky Bet York Stakes on Saturday is a Group Two race with £100,000 in prize money so it attracts a field from the top stables; Sir Michael Stoute and Saeed bin Suroor have provided recent winners.

At the start of the day, the Sky Bet Jockey Dash will entertain the crowd and raise money for the Injured Jockey’s Fund. A fitting part of the Go Racing in Yorkshire Summer Festival.

Friday 24th July (EBF Lyric Stakes and Live Music)
    Gates Open: 16:00 , First Race: 18:00 , Last Race: 20:30

Saturday 25th July (Sky Bet York Stakes and Live Music)
    Gates Open: 11:15 , First Race: 14:10 , Last Race: 17:20

The Curragh was not crowded last year, and re transport you can get the train from Dublin to Kildare then there is a free bus that picks you up from Kildare station and takes you straight to the course. Can highly recommend a bar called Bojangles.
