A mouthwatering sprint coming up in a few weeks time and even more so value-wise due to the word coming out that Marchand D’or sadly wont be attending due to a slight setback. Understandable really to leave her out as Freddie Head wants L’Abbeye tremendously bad.
Who do you fancy a fortnight in advance for this one?
My money is on War Artist at the moment. I was somewhat sad to see War Artist pull out of the Nunthorpe, even more so when it was switched to Newmarket, as I thought that on recent runs the 5f wouldve been perfect. War Artist was of course in the lead come the 5f post at the July Cup Meeting.
Back up to 6 furlongs here though and I’m willing to risk War Artist at the current price of 12/1 on Betfair.
Alternatives for me are, tentitively, US Ranger for one last time and possibly Ancien Regime if given a run this time.
Negatives – Corrybrough. If entered I can’t see this upcoming horse getting anywhere near this year.

August 24, 2008 at 19:35 #178019Thanks Corm
August 25, 2008 at 11:58 #178116I remain ever hopeful that Balthazaar’s Gift will win one of these Group One sprints when everything – as it needs to – falls his way.
August 27, 2008 at 00:10 #178309If I had to pick something now I would go for Kingsgate Native.
Gives the impression that 6 furlongs is best for him
August 29, 2008 at 00:18 #178507I did not realise Corrybrough was running in this.
If it is soft ground I could be temptedd – but I get a horrible feeling his price will be crap, maybe as low as 5/1.
I don’t think he would be pitched into this unless the trainer thought he had a realistic chance. It is a very open sprinting division.
Ground is crucial, though.

September 1, 2008 at 11:38 #178833In what looks an open race Kingsgate Native is now a doubtful runner.
Corryborough seems in at the deep end to me and will need to improve a lot to figure in this and his last 2 runs suggest he isn’t. Of the 3yos Sir Gerry & Captain Gerrard may be good ew value if they can return to their best form. War Artist looks to have strong claims though seems to always find one better.
September 1, 2008 at 12:32 #178845If War Artist comes to Haydock I can see this being a War Artist win.
War Artist has only found Kingsgate Native, US Ranger and Marchand Dor too good this year. US Ranger seemingly prefers softer side of good ground going by his July Cup performance and I think War Artist connections will have learnt to stay more reserved in the opening furlong this time around.
The one reservation I’d have is who is booked to ride as Kieran McEvoy has gone back home. Will it be Ryan Moore? Time will tell
September 1, 2008 at 13:30 #178853Sporting Life website states Kingsgate Native a non runner.
September 1, 2008 at 13:41 #178856Sir Gerry, Captain Gerrard and Dandy Man all withdrawn for this.
It’s gone from a highly competitive race to a normal sprint now with so many withdrawals IMO
September 1, 2008 at 13:54 #178859I’ve had a decent punt on African Rose. Her last run behind Marchand d’Or is a good piece of form and she looked as if the drop back to 6f would suit.
September 2, 2008 at 11:16 #178964War Artist is also a NR and now looks a weaker race than most GR1 sprints. African Rose looks a reasonable ew bet but she is 3lbs worse off with those she beat last time out and has been running over further so could find this a bit sharp. Equiano may be the best of the 3yos. Utmost Respect is now favourite and trainer very bullish and the ground will suit.
September 2, 2008 at 12:29 #178985I’m now swaying towards US Ranger of all horses.
The way that Murtagh got US Ranger going at Newmarket on G/S for the July Cup was a very good run. Especially when Marchand D’or only just beat him.
8/1 is a good price IMO
September 2, 2008 at 14:06 #179004I’m a late convert to DJ’s contention that he’s a hound. Place material only.

I wouldn’t have either of the O’Brien horses on my mind for this.
Both have shown their best form on good ground or better, (The Maurice de Gheest was run on going only fractionally slower than good), and both have disappointed on softer.
Given that Haydock is likely to be its normal bog, Corrybrough probably won’t see it out either, and the race loooks more and more like a gift for Utmost Respect.
4/1 is much too tempting, even for one who abhors ante-post betting.September 3, 2008 at 20:00 #179202We have had a very heavy spell of rain here and not surprizing that the going is now heavy.
If racing does go ahead then i cannot see it being a high class renewal of the race.
September 3, 2008 at 21:56 #179226Hope the covers work- I’m on African at 10s!
