Critcising the clerk of the course at Haydock is a regular pasttime on TRF, but he really doesn’t help himself.
On Nov 5th, 2009, this was the report with going stick values:
Chase 5.8 Hurdle 6.5 Heavy (Soft in places)
Today it’s:
Chase 4.9 Hurdle 6.3
So as both numbers are lower (i.e. softer) than that earlier report, the ground must be pretty bad up there.
But no, it’s given as Good, Good to Firm in places on the Hurdle Course.
Perhaps he’s using the wrong end of the stick ?

March 23, 2011 at 11:20 #346865I’ve spoken to him about the Goingstick and he is so against it that I wouldn’t put it past him not to just be making the numbers up to try to prove his point that it’s worthless.
March 23, 2011 at 11:26 #346866I;ve checked the historic ratings and assuming he isn’t making the numbers up he has either:
a) overwatered but doesn’t want to admit it
b) taken the goingstick readings immediately after watering has finished which has produced false results.Knowing Tellwrong, I’d go for a)

Pound to a pinch it’s fast ground on the old course, despite the going stick reading telling a different story altogether.
Totally irresponsible and misleading, but what will be done about it?March 23, 2011 at 12:40 #346881Hmmm… I’ve done a Haydock e/w treble consisting of horse’s that prefer fast going….. I feel genuinely shafted.
March 23, 2011 at 19:18 #346925I started a thread on another forum about this very issue.
There really is something rotten in the state of our going reports – but more rotten at Haydock.
March 23, 2011 at 22:10 #346959I was there today. I don’t know anything about ground conditions or the going stick but I’d assume that when dust is being kicked up by the runners, it’s pretty firm ground.
There’s no denying that Tellwright doesn’t make life easy for himself. No-one at Haydock does. I mean, Rick Astley? WHY?!
Big crowd there today by the way, I think they got a bit caught out.

If everyone wasnt so relaxed about misleading going reports and joined Clerkwatch a year ago and actually tried to meet the BHA and keep voicing their concerns about the going stick and how it is used then we might have got somewhere sooner
Fact one the BHA invited Jonjo and Myself to a meeting with Clerks, we asked for Lydia Hislop and ATR to be present and were told that it would be better if we had a meeting without cameras beforehand to build "Trust"
Nothing ever happened, and we never heard from the BHA again
March 24, 2011 at 04:51 #346986Tom Scudamore reported the chase course as riding "dead" after the opener. (RP Live Reporter)
