Meshaheer, compare and discuss:
"I’ll never take pleasure in the disappointment his connections feel as Hawk Wing is exceptionally talented."
"Last laugh, as usual, is on Hawk Wing. When will they ever learn?"
June 17, 2003 at 17:38 #91453Monkey, one of those comments I didn’t write on here, and one was intended as a light hearted quip. If you don’t believe what I have said about the hype then it’s up to you. You obviously don’t have much else to do apart from to compare people’s postings on different forums.
June 17, 2003 at 17:41 #91454Nice one, Ian! I didn’t think it would be long before you beggars came out of the woodwork!
Well, when a monster meets a force of nature (who is also a bit of beast/machine), as I actually feared, it’s not wise to bet on the definitive monster. Not that I would have considered betting on HW at the price.
What I’m kicking myself for is not lumping on DD ew, but doing him in forecasts with horses who, bizarrely, were never "at the races". What happened to Clodovil and Monsieur Bond in the King James, incidentally?
It paid off for you this time, but I still think you have strange disinclination to take the form of group races at face value, as if the horses were habitually as quixotic platers.
If you have a chronic aversion to "tall poppies" as the Aussies say, always looking for angles to disparage the best form in the better races, as I used to do habitually, you can end up like the oogly bird. But have you not found this to be the case – and your success in disparaging HW in this race (though not the last), a welcome departure from the norm?
On the other hand, I have been surprised at the extraordinary acuity of the comments of people in this game, even considering that they live on their wits and learn extremely quickly and shrewdly from experience. Remember Pottsy commenting on how he thought the other horses would have caught up with him, and we’d seen the best of him?

June 17, 2003 at 17:55 #91455Meshaheer, I suppose some people would say none of us have much to do if we spend time on this and other forums. But if you want to post on them you can expect your contributions to be read.
I made no reference to the Hawk wing hype. But I do find it extraordinary. Both for and against.
June 17, 2003 at 18:08 #91456Fair enough Monkey. I guess I just didn’t reiterate it’s not the horse I’m against, and neither his connections for that matter although I’m still waiting to see him in a 6f race.
More importantly it’s Dubai Destination who should be generally receiving the attention, to keep things positive for the meanwhile. Hopefully Hawk Wing’s problems will be sorted out, and this is a serious question: Would they try him at 6f next or somewhere along the line?
June 17, 2003 at 18:21 #91457Ian,
I don’t "get off".
My only point was that while predicting Hawk Wing wouldn’t win is fair enough (and well done to anyone who managed to lay him at 2/5), actually enjoying seeing any horse run badly is verging on poor taste. I have no truck with Dubai Destination winning and I’m satisfied that Nick simply chose the wrong words to express himself (I’m guessing he was one of the layers in question!). I’d like to think that you would have understood my sentiments, but you appear to have gone off at a tangent about the nature of hype and true greatness ~ not my point at all old chap.
What’s with the confusing overuse of smileys by the way?
June 17, 2003 at 18:29 #91458Grimes,
I haven’t read the King James lately, but can I take a wild guess that one of them was either married to Hezekiah, or perhaps turned into a pillar of salt?
June 17, 2003 at 18:50 #91459All I’m going to say for now is – I’m surprised and saddened by some of the comments in this thread by people I thought loved horses and horseracing:(
I backed Dubai Destination (11/2) but there’s no way I can begin to bring down Hawk Wing, it’s no wonder I try and stay away from after race crazy threads! :scratchchin:
Hawk Wing knockers chase this >>>
(Edited by Jim JTS at 8:49 pm on June 17, 2003)
June 17, 2003 at 18:57 #91460I love horses and horse racing, but I’ll still knock a horse’s performance. I may have slated the expectations of Hawk Wing (like others) but it is absurd to suggest you don’t love horses or racing if you climb off the fence or dare to knock something.
June 17, 2003 at 19:13 #91461Well said Meshaheer, for someone so young you have some very intersting observations to make IMO and obviously have a pretty deep understanding of the sport. Please take this as a compliment and not a patronising statement in any way at all as I’ve had enough of annoying people without really intending to.
Don’t people want to hear strong opinions on here ?
June 17, 2003 at 19:14 #91462Jim JTS.
Well said Jim, I did back Hawk Wing,I have looked at the Video of the race a number of times. And in my opinion{ if my opinion counts for anything} M.J.Kinane lost the race, not Hawk Wing.
Kinane had every chance to bring Hawk Wing to the front, where he likes best.He choose to sit back in the field,he then got boxed in and had to switch to a different position midfield. He again could not get a clear run,so again he switched to the outside of the field. It was then to late to do anything about HIS blunder.Dubai Destination was drawing clear at this late stage. If anyone has the tape watch it and you will see what I am talking about.
Now for all of those who might be thinking that I am a BAD LOSER,they are ALL RIGHT.
I do not mind if my horses lose,as long as I get a fair run for my money. This time I did not.I hate loseing because of a jockeys incompetance.I know well that M.J.Kinane is one of the top jockeys riding. He has Won on numerous occasions in the past, and he has made me an awfull lot of money. But that doe’s not take away from HIS defeat on Hawk Wing today.Every horse I back I expect at least a good run.The horse is only going by his rider.Left,Right,Forward,or in the case of Hawk Wings rider,Backwards.Discracefull judgement on Kinanes part.I am sure we will all read about his ride in Tomorrows papers.Anyway tomorrows another day.sorry about the long reply.I guess its in my blood.
Good Luck to ALL.
Winalot.
June 17, 2003 at 20:02 #91463Well done to Dubai Destination and all connections, I hope Hawk Wing returns to the track and runs up to his Newbury running. Again, great display by the winner, and great training performance by Godolphin for getting him back on the course.

June 17, 2003 at 21:06 #91465Other Roberto one-offs; unbeaten, and never off the bridle as a two-year-old. Derby winner. Effortless winner of the Coronation Cup. I saw him. On the day he beat the Brigadier I was deeply saddened but not particularly surprised, but whatever may be said of him, his record was far superior to that of this (now annoyingly hyped) Hawk Wing whose accomplishments are thin by any stretch of the imagination. How can a victory in the Lockinge possibly merit this degree of marvel and esteem? There have been so many fabulous racehorses over the years, and Hawk Wing is not one of them.
June 17, 2003 at 21:18 #91466I tried to write a a polite post here etc but sod it.
I’m glad the hoss did not win today because
a)A far better horse beat it (as did a few more)
b) I would not be able to stand the hype if he had (but god knows the PM is just as bad).
c) He ain’t a brilliant hoss
d) I layed as any sensible punter would as, it price was to short for its form, and there was far better "backing potential" horeses in the race.
(dons tin helmet and starts digging trenches for long tirade).
June 17, 2003 at 21:21 #91467I have slight reservations about point ‘c’ Dungheap as on his day I believe Hawk Wing to be capable of a pretty serious performance.
In the main though I applaud you.
June 18, 2003 at 06:23 #91468Ta Nick,
I meant consistant not brilliant, he has shown glimses of brilliance, but IMO not in the same leaugue as "brilliant "horses like singspiel, rock of gibralter who you always felt could win their race, before during and after, not like Hawk Wing, whats the recipe today Jim.
Comments in running from today’s racing post.

However, it’s hard to know what to make of Hawk Wing, who was so sensationally impressive when allowedto dominate in the Lockinge but ran no race at all here, to the sartisfaction no doubt of those who were far from convinced he would repeat the performance. There was no attempt to dominate this time, but after being settled in behind the predicted fast pace and then angled out for his run in plenty of time he found nothing and trailed in a bitterly disappointng seventh, beaten by around the same distance as he had won by at Newbury. Something was clearly amiss again and within minutes of the race there was first a suggestion that he had coughed on pulling up, and then an official announcement to the effect that on veterinary examination he was found to be lame. But one has to wonder now not only if we will ever see the Lockinge Hawk Wing again, but alsowhether that form should still be accepted at face value.
The hype surrounding this horse has been phenominal, and I see those that post lockinge, were shouting down anyone who question the horse, or suggested that the lockinge form in their opinion, was suspect are remaining relativly quiet at the moment. More in puzzlement, I suspect, than dejection at the horses performance.
The best performers, from Ballydoyle IMO are not galileo, HW ROG etc, but the PR machine, that hypes horses, for future stud fees, the press latch on and each one becomes a superstar, very often before they have run. It is a sad reflection of modern society, if only the BRB could do the same.
