A whole nation seemingly with its entire weekend wrapped up in what happens on the Sunday evening.

I wouldn’t even describe myself as particularly patriotic, partly because I still think there is an unpleasant white racist element among England football fans, but even I have been finding it surreal.

Win or lose, Manager Gareth Southgate has taken a squad to a World Cup semi final and now a Euro Final – for me, on paper, he is already the all-time greatest England Manager.

I still hope he wins tonight, though.

He seems like a really decent guy.

This team does not in any way represent the knuckle dragging racist morons. They have indirectly said as much imo. There will always be a minority of such people amongst the fans of just about any team and indeed the population of any country.

This is unlike any England team I’ve ever seen before. Fully agree with with you about Southgate. The team spirit he and the rest of the staff have instilled in them really does seem to have made a difference. We’ve always had good players but in the past there was often something lacking when they pulled on England shirts. They asked one of the squad who hasn’t played if he was upset about it and he simply replied that it’s been the best six weeks of his life. Sums it up for me, everyone matters, everyone is part of it.

I’m not going to be too disappointed if we lose tonight, the two best teams in the tournament are in the final and it’s pretty much 50/50 as to who wins. We deserve to be there, Italy deserve to be there and either team would be a worthy winner. I’ve enjoyed this run to the final so much and it’s great to see how much it’s brought people together.

    Enjoy everyone :good:

Best post I have read from you, Richard, since I returned to TRF.

I agree 100% on all counts.

It’s either “Coming Home” or “Going To Rome” and with World Cup winners France’s defensive failings brutally exposed at these Euros, yes, I agree, the best two sides at this tournament are contesting the Final.

My analysis – after an early lead England rampant for 15 minutes, insane early fractions with the tempo and Italy right under the cosh.

But the Italians weathered the storm and came into it and by half time England had slightly shaded it and value for a narrow lead.

But Italy totally dominated the second half, deserved the equaliser, and looked the stronger in extra time too.

Don’t blame Southgate for bringing specialist penalty takers on who had no time to get into the game – they are young lads but also professionals and Marcus Rashford has plenty of experience already.

Being old school, I am not a fan of the modern stuttering run up, but it had worked for Rashford in the past.

Feel sorry for Jordan Pickford as two saves in a shoot out would normally be enough to be on the winning side but wasn’t here.

Italy deserved the win and while England are clearly progressing the worry is you have to seize your chance in these tournaments as they aren’t leagues, it’s knockout after three group games and in that scenario you always need a bit of luck.

England could be even better at the World Cup yet not get as far.

    That’s football.

I only talk rubbish 95% of the time Ian ;-)

That sums it up pretty well for me. Italy only turned up after half an hour or so and we simply didn’t have an answer in the end.

I have to say I feel somewhat deflated right now but it will pass soon enough. When the dust settles they can be proud of themselves and we can be proud of them.

Agree with the assessment. England were only on top for the first 20 minutes. After that Italy was much the better side.

Did England create a good chance after the goal? They really needed to push on when they were ahead and try to get a second. Paid the price for being too cautious again.

Rashford’s penalty was atrocious and I am not sure a 19 year old kid should have had the responsibility of the last kick. Why didn’t Sterling take one?

Sterling not the best penalty taker. Looking at his stats only a 40% success rate. But yes whether at 19 Saka was the right man for the job

I believe Saka has never taken a penalty in a match either. Not blaming the lad – anyone can miss a penalty – but that was a big ask for an inexperienced player.

The average age of a soldier in Vietnam was 19, and he was likely to be unmarried—a significant difference from a soldier in World War II. Approximately 25% were draftees. The US soldiers who fought in the Vietnam War were different in many ways from those who had fought in earlier wars.

And they didn’t win the war against the snipers in the northern jungles who were much like the Italians, who are battle worn, and wear the greasepaint of experience.

Corky is right – young, gifted, and far too young.

Sorry to spoil the analogy but the claim made in Paul Hardcastle’s song is disputed. It is now believed the average age was 23, not 19.

Interesting and he would never have had a hit with that age.

A great match last night. Heard about the racist abuse on social media this morning and these people are not fans of the game in my view. They’re not even descent people.

England started well, as the early goal proved, but Italy grew in strength in the second half and got their equalizer. Felt like Italy was playing for penalties, especially when their best player went off injured.

Yes the three final players took awful penalties, Rashford especially but I don’t care if England lost 10 – 0 the no excuse for racist abuse.

Finally on Saturday night Channel 4 had a change of programme and showed the 1966 world cup final in colour. I’d would have been 3 when it was played live  . They were great players no doubt but they looked old. You can still catch it on ALL 4

Homer was this what you meant

    Which was about cricket

You've got to accentuate the positive.
    Eliminate the negative.
    Latch on to the affirmative.
Don't mess with mister in between.

Great to have a level headed thread.

Italy pulled off the “Italian job” and they did what Keyser Sozer said in the usual suspects.
They convinced the team, the ref and the fans that the devil didn’t exist.
While they were patting this mainly youthful team on the head they were also nicking the ice cream.
    Fair play to them.

“Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we may die” was the saying that kept rolling around my brain this strangely strange weekend; and now, “the carnival is over”

That aside, this take-it-or-leave-it follower of footie thoroughly enjoyed the two hours’ entertainment. Southgate is a gent and his team are fine young men. Well done
