I’ve heard on the grapevine that St Nicholas Abbey could be campaigned towards the Supreme Novice Hurdle at Cheltenham. It could make sense as surely Coolmore have enough stallions with larger stud fees than he, and the idea of another year on the flat seems a bit redundant. Historically, as we know(and were so repeatedly reminded before last years Champion Hurdle), Montjeu’s don’t get the hill, but after seeing Hurricane Fly hack up last year and giving St Nic’s undoubted ability, what does everyone think? Of course as I earlier mentioned it’s all word on the street right now but an exciting prospect nonetheless?

September 24, 2011 at 19:46 #371932I’m pretty sure this is has come from some comments on twitter a few weeks ago when a couple of people were debating SNA and someone suggested he go hurdling… it took less than 24 hours for people to be reacting to it as if it were a true story rather than someone’s joke/dream.

Quite right,
Roseblossom
. I only wish we could say the same for the hurdling rumours about
Dandino
, which turn out to be true. Worst management decision from Elite in a long while, in my opinion… he’s not been well campaigned this year, but this takes the biscuit. Doesn’t stay, hates soft ground, so send him hurdling!

Not going to agree with you there I’m afraid, thrilled to bits with the news. Not worried about staying, plenty of horses successfully switch codes despite not getting further than 12f on the flat, ground, yes a bit concerned, but he has won on soft and they’ve said he won’t race over the winter. It’s also been made clear if they don’t think he’s any good at it, he won’t carry on. Been very disappointed by some members who almost seem to be wanting something to happen to him so they can say they were right all along.
I rarely agree with management decisions but this one makes a great deal more sense than the suggestion that Border Patrol might go hurdling.

Dandino
: that’s the one saving grace to this (in my opinion) singularly quixotic plan!

I’d rather Cheltenham than Epsom, which he seemed to handle just fine.
I’m afraid I must have missed the bit in the BHA owner guidelines that say only the lowliest horses can go jumping. However, having had this debate previously, I’m not interested in doing it again. I’m glad he’s going jumping and unlike the naysayers hoping for disaster, I’ll be hoping he does it well or shows quickly that he won’t be high in the pecking order of his schooling mates.

I must have missed the previous debate here, apologies
Roseblossom
for starting it again, and please don’t waste time responding to points you’ve already addressed. And of course, I share your hopes that the experiment soon reaches a positive conclusion, one way or the other.
Personally, of course, I’d rather see him win that flat Group 1 –
Campanologist
(beaten twice by
Dandino
this year) managed just that easily enough in Germany today, and a European Group 1 should be within
Dandino
‘s capabilities (if they don’t spoil him by trying too many more of these "experiments".)
The odd part is, that the management are still holding on to the idea of Dandino gaining a place as a stallion: but evoking Alderbrook hardly cuts much ice there. Was his stud career enhanced by winning the
Champion Hurdle
, I wonder?

I bow to your greater knowledge of the breeding game Pinza, but I feel that Alderbrook’s Flat exploits (his only group wins coming in the traditionally weak Select Stakes and in a substandard Prix Dollar) wouldn’t have garnered him any greater following as a sire than his hurdling career did. Dandino is a classier animal all told on the Flat, but he would be nothing but a middle-ranking jumps sire even if he were to find that elusive German/Italian/Turkish Group 1 success.

Agreed on
Alderbrook
Rory
: my question was actually a genuine musing rather than rhetorical!
The frustration with
Dandino
this season has been the management’s chopping and changing, plus a seeming determination (from James Given perhaps also) to make the horse into something – a Cup Horse – which he patently isn’t. This sort of failure is rare with Matthew Budden and his team, and we all hope that this call is a right one at last.
