A rather more accurate critique of Findlay than the usual bromide served up in the media and this forum.
September 13, 2010 at 09:30 #317316Very much in keeping with my own opinion of Mr Findlay you hear him before you see him type, gets on my nerves and cant see why he should have been allegedly allowed to lay horses in P Nicholls stable anyway why the hell does he think he is so special.
January 7, 2013 at 12:56 #23372His name will always be associated with denman- you kind of miss his outright honesty. the last I heard he had been banned from british courses due to laying one of his on betfair (gullible gordon.)
had sold his horses and had moved to australia. is he still a successful punter? or rather was he ever a successful punter? <!– s:shock: –>
<!– s:shock: –> one of the last interviews I read with him he claimed it was only possible to make money as a punter on betfair- impossible at the bookies but I wonder with the premium charge betfair introduced whether that’s still the case.the reason I ask is because someone recently put this documentary up on youtube: <!– m –>http://youtu.be/t3I-F5ctHfA<!– m –>
theres one on terry ramsden as well. these guys seem to be a law unto themselves, no bother with staking plans and betting banks here- its all throw caution to the wind? <!– s:lol: –>
<!– s:lol: –>I wonder what people think of this and whether anyone else has a similar attitude to punting- or is it bound to end in tears? I do get bored sometimes when I hear "i’ve had a half a point each way on this one at 16-1"
January 7, 2013 at 13:10 #425586You could say he has "gone to the dogs" – he is in charge of Coventry Dog Stadium, his official title is Promoter but, by all accounts, he is very hands on.

January 8, 2013 at 10:12 #425657Harry was squeezed like a Lemon just like Terry Ramsden before him,in fact Harry was the modern day Terry and there likes are few and far between. Both supported Racing but Racing shafted them,it takes a bit more than these guys had to last as long as Barney Curley but they are all the ‘Robin hoods’ in my eyes taking on the ‘Robin Ba*tards’ and beating them, very few do that even fewer do it the way they did. I remember some years ago Terry lining his troops up for a tilt at the Cheltenham festival, every horse laid out for its race,I was a massive fan of
Stearsby
at the time so was obviously keen on what else this larger than life character owned,he’d got a horse running in the Coral Golden hurdle final called
Motivator
who was freely available at 16/1 Ante-Post and 10/1 on the day, well Terry went in with massive wagers £20k e/w was recorded and this fellow went off fav at 7/1 winning comfortably. The RSA had
Stearsby
running and I was on at 20/1,I only feared ‘Bolands Cross’ and Fitzes ‘Strands of gold’ but we still managed 3rd place to a bloody 9yo Novice called ‘Cross Master’!!
After that Terry had a 4yo youngster in the Triumph hurdle a Grey calledBrunico
,a notoriously difficult race to win and ‘Brunico’ should have won but I’m afraid Dermot Browne didn’t ride his greatest race as he closed down ‘Solar cloud’ hand over fist, still at 16/1 Terrys horse had again done him proud.I remember him going on to buy
Mr Snugfit
to win the Grand National for him,he had allegedly had a bet of 1 Million pounds on it!
Unreal for a race like that, the horse did place I believe!! Yes you dont see the likes of Harry and Terry very much these days!January 8, 2013 at 12:54 #425665Harry was squeezed like a Lemon just like Terry Ramsden before him,in fact Harry was the modern day Terry and there likes are few and far between. Both supported Racing but Racing shafted them,it takes a bit more than these guys had to last as long as Barney Curley but they are all the ‘Robin hoods’ in my eyes taking on the ‘Robin Ba*tards’ and beating them, very few do that even fewer do it the way they did…

That Terry Ramsden was such a nice chap.

Ramsden’s fortune did not come from gambling on horses. Using money "earnt" from Japanese Bonds, may have had a few nice racing winners in the early days, but it was luck that ran out. Bookmakers loved taking his bets because they knew who’d win in the end.
Value Is EverythingJanuary 8, 2013 at 13:26 #425669When the ego takes over …

If you fink ‘arry had a huge ego, he had nothing on Ramsden.
He was the living embodiment of Harry Enfield’s obnoxious ( albeit funny ) character, Loadsamoney.
I remember him all too well; he featured regularly in the early days of CH4 Racing. He was often described as a "colourful" character. For that read, blowhard ! The interviewer would ask, " Well, Terry, how much will you be having on your horse ? " … " Ahhh", came the reply, " just a few hundred fouzhaaand "
JP McManus’s bets were small fry compared to Ramsden’s.
It was inevitable that his luck and money would run out. He was a loose cannon, who bet on instinct and a naive loyalty to his own horses – although he did win a substantial amount on Katies, his star filly and possibly the best horse he owned.
He did try to make a "comeback" a few years ago, but obviously his dreams outweighed his once good luck and his cash reserves.
Oh, how the mighty fall.

Very good!January 8, 2013 at 14:17 #425678Didn’t Harry Findlay say he was giving up racing in GB to go and live in Australia? How come he was sent to Coventry?
Value Is EverythingJanuary 8, 2013 at 14:36 #425679For those who may be interested –
there is a 30 minute documentary on YouTube about Terry Ramsden. It is called, funnily enough, "Terry Ramsden – documentary"

January 8, 2013 at 15:02 #425683From memory A Licence To Print Money by Jamie Reid was quite illuminating about Terry Ramsden and similiar characters. Anyway, most definitely a recommended read.
I`m afraid, from what I`ve read over the years, the boy Ramsden unfortunately squeezed his own lemon till the juice runneth out, with all due respect to a Zeppelin early number.
I did see him at a 2000 Guineas meeting a few years ago, but I guess his resurgence hasn`t materialised yet.

He just wanted to be in a barren wasteland full of convicts…

January 8, 2013 at 21:35 #425710terry ramsden may have fallen from a mighty height (I wonder what he’s doing now?)
but I would imagine the vast majority of gamblers, and people in general (myself included) never reach those heights to fall from in the first place.
the documentary on ramsden seemed to suggest he lost something in the region of 30-50 million to ladbrokes, and was personally responsible for the majority of their profits in that period. david ashforth said he won most of his money speculating on japanese currency.
January 9, 2013 at 00:11 #425721Love the Findlay documentary (also the youtube poster’s name is hilarious) . Very entertaining, but doesn’t really tell us a lot about him. He goes skint, he wins it back, no explanation of how he gets refinanced. If most of us went on his alleged unbridled gambling benders we would be skint and unable to get credit for years to come.
I did hear an interesting nickname for him from an on course rep once- "crime". I asked why is he called him that – he said, "all the bookies call him that because Crime doesn’t pay….". Read into that what you will.
As for Mr Ramsden I fondly remember his Glen International sponsoring the Solario Stakes meeting in 1987, and me and my dad spending a glorious summer’s afternoon lumping onto Cecil hotpot Sanquirico who duly obliged. It seemed we drank in every boozer from Sandown to Lambeth on the way home!
Ramsden is still actively involved in the sport, the registered owner of Jake The Snake who was originally named after his son.

He did have to apply for a new set of colours though.

Rather be a convict then have an aversion to soap and water
Our winter jumping series has 18 races worth $100 000 or more.Ah now back to having a look at the flying Australian dollar, and reading about all the resources and precious metals we have in the ground

Australia is a wonderful place with everything going for it.
What saddens so many Pom visitors nowadays is that over the last twenty years or so it has completely lost it’s great tradition of being able to laugh at itself.
