The ubiquitous declaration of a ‘great ride’ is applied to most winning outings, but take a look at this 17-year-old on Old Guard in the Greatwood.
I couldn’t tell the difference between him and a stylish, experienced jockey on today’s evidence, and he showed a real touch of aggression from the last. He’s ridden six winners from 32 public rides and has to be a steal with a seven pound advantage, or any lesser allowance.
I’d be quite surprised if he doesn’t have a decent career ahead.

November 15, 2015 at 18:40 #1221895It was a very cool ride, and he benefits not only from his claim and his association with Nicholls, but that priceless confidence that comes with youth, when victories like today seem just the first of many.
No doubt, that claim of his will be jealously guarded, and it won’t be the last good race he’ll win this season.
November 15, 2015 at 18:48 #1221897Indeed Nicholls and Cobden could be a partnership to follow this season if the market doesn’t cotton onto them. Today’s win could be a problem! Interesting comment from Nicholls that he noticed Harry a while ago and was happy to put him up in a competitive handicap like today’s.
November 16, 2015 at 21:05 #1221995Young Cobden rides 16/1 shot Over The Air for J Spearing tomorrow in the 2.35.
Conversation with Nicholls went one of two ways:
‘This’ll win – get on!’
‘This has no chance, but will be a bit of experience for your lad without affecting his claim’
November 17, 2015 at 09:55 #1222018I’ve had a little play at 14’s Joe. In with a shout, nothing more.

November 17, 2015 at 10:59 #1222021Long standing traditional hunting and point to point family, the Cobdens. They had a good hunter chaser called Mr Golightly in the mid 90’s, who had the ability to beat a future Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, Cool Dawn, in a maiden hunter chase at Folkestone.
Can’t be sure, but I think that was a three generation thing – the mother owned the horse, her daughter trained it, her granddaughter rode it.
November 17, 2015 at 13:15 #1222028He was good in Steptoe

The way he’s riding he’d get Hercules to win pulling his cart….
Just won the 2:00pm getting his horse to ping the last.
November 17, 2015 at 14:56 #1222035Well it must have been ‘This’ll win – get on!’. Well done Chaps.
November 17, 2015 at 16:06 #1222050Er, it didn’t win.
November 17, 2015 at 16:18 #1222051Unless I’ve made a complete balls of it, young fella picked up a spare in the 2pm, or it was a jockey change. The one I mentioned was the only one he was booked for in the jockey decs in the RP. Rode a lovely race by all accounts to win on the 15/2 chance.
The one Mike and I backed halved in price overnight, but never really threatened.
He has one mount (at the moment!) booked for tomorrow for Nicholls in the 12.40 – Varom
November 17, 2015 at 16:26 #1222052Not a jockey change,Joe, he was down to ride Nebula Storm in my paper.
November 17, 2015 at 17:55 #1222061One should never underestimate the ability of gambling to infuriate – the first I knew of Cobden riding Nebula Storm was when he was mentioned booting away from the last! Certainly didn’t show up in the jockey’s ‘forthcoming rides’ section.
Nebula Storm showed a nice turn of foot I thought. Over The Air tired in the ground, but couldn’t possibly have beaten the winner Pithivier, who looked a mile ahead of the handicapper.

November 17, 2015 at 18:33 #1222064Stylish and confident. Looked quite tall though so better hope it was a televisual illusion or that he’s stopped growing.
November 17, 2015 at 19:05 #1222068He has made 9st 7lbs this year (which I certainly haven’t), but may still grow at that age.

Wish I’d kept last night’s online RP card now. As Mike said, it wasn’t in his booked rides when you clicked on his name (whereas the other one was), and in the Spotlights summary, no mention was made that he was riding (whereas it was in the Spotlight for his other ride)
November 18, 2015 at 09:16 #1222138Er, it didn’t win.
Oppppps, thought he had only one ride and when seeing he’d ridden a winner assumed it was the one. Sorry.
