What do you mean, the Hall Brothers Distribution Open National Hunt Flat Race (Category 2 Elimination) (GBB Race) (Class 5) (4-5yo) isn’t a big race??

It’s got the ingredients to be the most excellent of races. I for one have set the Sky+ ready, and can’t wait to see how Luke Harvey will fill the 15 minutes before this clash.

I can copy and paste the relevant parts of the racecard to you.

    1 2-1 Whatawit 5 11-9 Sir Mark Prescott Bt Sean Bowen OR – TS 98 RPR 113
    2 670- Johnthepostman 5 11-2 Tracey Barfoot-Saunt Mr Geoff Barfoot-Saunt OR – TS – RPR 52

    Winner: £2614
    Runners: 2 (Max 16)
    Going: Good
    EW Terms: N/A

The expected favourite could be WHATAWIT, winner last time out of a Maiden NH Flat Race at Huntingdon on May 11th, beating 15 rivals, with the second (Lucky Place) 8 lengths back. That was an impressive way to follow up a promising racecourse debut when second to Asta La Pasta at Market Rasen in February. In-form jockey Sean Bowen keeps the ride for Sir Mark Prescott Bt (Editor: wtf is ‘Bt’?).

Vying for favouritism is JOHNTHEPOSTMAN. Beaten over 33 lengths in a Flat Race at Garthorpe PTP in May 2022 when last of six, Tracey Barfoot-Saunt’s charge aims to lose the maiden tag after two further NH Flat Race appearances under rules. Back in March, at Doncaster, Johnthepostman finished 71 lengths off Luckie Seven over the extended 16f to finish last of the seven to complete. The market wasn’t keen, with the SP returning at 300/1. The RPR was recorded at 40.

A month later (April 21st) was the last time we saw this chestnut gelding on the track. The public remaining unconvinced of his chance in a 13-runner NH Flat race at Exeter, being returned at 300/1 again before finishing 92 lengths last of the 13 behind the comfortable winner Supremely West. Indeed, Johnthepostman “Raced wide, in touch with leaders, weakened 6f out, tailed off (op 125/1 tchd 400/1)” according to the Racing Post.

    So, there we have it.

I wonder if we’ll see any ducking and diving to arrange a sneaky handicap mark for either horse here! ;)

Fair play to the Barfoot-Saunts though, finding an opportunity to try to break their five-year losing streak. Imagine their disappointment when they realised someone else was taking it seriously. That said, if they can finish second for £1900 profit – well that isn’t the worst race planning I’ve ever seen.

Saturday is a busy day of sport but I have the Sky+ set for this one. Keen to see the TV coverage of this on SSR, especially as neither of the owners currently manages a Premier League football team. Maybe Harvey (it’ll be him, let’s face it) could interview every spectator who’ll be left at the course at five to nine on a Saturday night – that would help kill two or three minutes, I guess.

In unrelated news…whatever happened to races where bookies put up “No Offers” as the price? Does that still happen? I saw it once at Exeter when I was a teenager. Forty years ago!

Not a big race, should be moved to the closed lounge.. :mail:

I’ve gone for Whatawit to win by 20+ lengths, on the bridle, jockey smoking a roll up whilst on the phone to the Chinese takeaway.

Chezza hopes it wins by 19 and three quarter lengths, eased down, having been 30 clear a furlong out.

They should turn this race into a handicap bumper. Both runners already with two NHF races under their belt, the top-weight to carry 11-09 and the no.2 three stone less. I’d still go for the Prescott horse.

Current betting on the TRF Race of the Day:

Whatawit: best priced 1/80 with LS Bet (who are they?). All other firms 1/100.

Johnthepostman: best priced 25/1 with Bet365. All other firms 12/1.

Should we have a TRF whip round and gather £80 to win £1?

Better still, on the Betfair Exchange it is 1.03 for £11 on Whatawit and 30 against Johnthepostman.

1/200 with some firms now. Someone must have had a million on to win £10,000.

    A tremendous contest.

The winner briefly went “No Offers” at Betfair Exchange before the race had even begun, and was again “No Offers” from almost a circuit to go.

The shrewdies among us were on at the 1.03 a few minutes before post time.

Let’s hope Sean Bowen remembers to weigh in – that was always the biggest danger tbh.
