Well it looks like Godolphin have finally called a day on the career of the horse who should have won the 2006 derby on his second start. Hard to believe a horse with his raw ability only saw the track 3 times in 4 years.

Wonder if they’ll put him to stud?

Another success story for the mighty Godolphin
March 25, 2009 at 15:50 #218290To be fair to Godolphin this time, he was a crock when they already got him.
March 25, 2009 at 16:02 #218296I’m not one to judge when it comes to NH, but he should make a very capable sire.
He wasn’t done and dusted entirely – after the win at Nottingham I clearly remember the punters taking note for the Juddmonte.

What a misinformed opinion.
March 25, 2009 at 19:37 #218338…………….a poor buy though surely?!

March 25, 2009 at 19:46 #218339He wasn’t bought though, he was transferred from wearing the colours of one Maktoum brother, to being owned by them all (Godolphin). Hatta Fort would be another example of this.
March 25, 2009 at 20:16 #218346Aaaaah yes, my mistake, apologies.

Whether or not the horse was entirely sound when he was transferred to Saeed Bin Suroor, Salselon, his subsequent failure to see the racecourse merely adds to a long list of otherwise talent-laden animals which have fallen foul of the Godolphin regime.
And isn’t Hala Bek’s former owner (Sheikh Ahmed al Maktoum) Sheikh Mohammed’s uncle, rather than brother?

Errr no.
March 25, 2009 at 21:17 #218359No, it doesn’t. He arrived at Godolphin unsound, and continued, by and large, to be that way. By all means criticise Godolphin where they have made mistakes, but putting them down for housing a brittle horse is very much wide of the mark. imvho.

I think quite the opposite. Such a chronically unsound horse would be a bizarre stallion choice for any mare owner.
March 25, 2009 at 21:36 #218362That was a very poor Derby Hala Bek ran in, seen stronger Group 3’s, Dylan Thomas wasn’t yet the horse he became.
I always thought Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum was the younger brother of Sheikh Mohammed.

I would agree with that, but would also add that it was only hala bek’s second start after running in a maiden in newbury a couple of weeks beforehand and he was travelling winner before jerking.

I must be getting my Maktoums mixed up again.
Just out of interest, when did Hala Bek make the switch to Godolphin?
March 25, 2009 at 23:41 #218384Think it was at the end of his 3yo season by recollection, pretty sure he’d been off the track for quite some time when he moved as pretty sure I can remember jarvis talking about getting him ready for a comeback.
March 25, 2009 at 23:52 #218390As far as I’m aware, the horse joined Godolphin sometime in early 2008, he was with neither Jarvis nor Godolphin in 2007, spending that time recovering at one of the Darley stables.
