With the news that Zafisio is going hurdling, I wonder if anyone can recall another Group 1 winner (in his case the Gran Criterium) going hurdling ?
Sadly he hasnt progressed though as he has only beaten 2 horses home in total in 4 races since, and one of them was a pacemaker.January 11, 2012 at 12:41 #386429Cezanne – He won the Irish Champion Stakes before going hurdling.
January 11, 2012 at 12:56 #386431Aurelius (St Leger), Le Paillon (Arc).
January 11, 2012 at 14:44 #386439Royal Gait won the Cadran
January 11, 2012 at 15:02 #386445Royal Gait was also dqd after passing the post first in Ascot Gold Cup
January 11, 2012 at 15:06 #386447If Cash Asmussen hadn’t knocked Tony Clark off his mount through impatience, he could have come wide and still won by daylight, but it was a horrendous and dangerous move and he should have been banned for longer.
January 11, 2012 at 15:32 #386451Personally I never rated Asmussen as a jockey.
Having said that I spoke to him at length a few times at York and Haydock Park, and a more pleasant, charming jockey you would struggle to find.January 11, 2012 at 16:37 #386457I have a vague memory of Admetus, won the Laurel International in the 70s, when it was the big cross-atlantic challenge race. Wasn’t very successful over hurdles, I don#t think. Anyone else remember?
January 11, 2012 at 16:43 #386459Just googled it, beat Dahlia in 1974. No record of performances over hurdles tho.
January 11, 2012 at 16:53 #386460The trouble is that the pattern has changed over the years. The Flying Childers was a group one, the National Stakes at Sandown was a championship race, while the Lockinge, Prince of Wales and Queen Anne have all been elevated to group one status relatively recently.
January 11, 2012 at 19:05 #3864672005 Prix Du Cadran winner Reefscape was last seen hurdling in France following a failed stud career.
January 11, 2012 at 19:37 #386471MOONAX – Won 1994 St Leger (at 40/1) & Prix Royal-Oak (French Leger), later ran (2nd, 3rd & 6th respectively) in Novice Hurdles at Huntingdon, Leicester & Ludlow in the 96/97 NH season.
January 11, 2012 at 21:34 #386484^a good call, and related to your namesake I think…
…a little the other way round, but Kasbah Bliss has recently got his Gr. 1 after a few near misses.
January 11, 2012 at 22:36 #386502Lookout (Kentucky Derby-died in a steeplechase fall)
Damask (Louisiana Derby, Aqueduct Handicap, 2nd to Man O’War in the Jockey Club Gold Cup)
Sailor Beware (Junior Champion Stakes, defeating Triple Crown winner Omaha)
Azucar (Santa Anita Handicap-after his jumps career)
Predominio (Gran Premio Cruzeiro do Sol)
Bisbalense (Premio Nacional Ricardo Lyon)
Pompeyo (El Ensayo)
Mistico (Polla de Potrillos)
Uptown Swell (Bowling Green Handicap)
Also, Steppenwolfer (3rd in the Kentucky Derby) and Mackey Dwyer (2nd in the Preakness Stakes) became hurdlers later.January 12, 2012 at 08:23 #386533Wasn’t With Anticipation a hurdler before swtiching to the flat too Miss Woodford?
January 12, 2012 at 09:44 #386537I know it’s a bit off topic but possibly the best Group winner as a hurdler was Alderbrook who was a Group 2 winner.

I’m not sure that he ever won what is a group race on the flat but Sea Pigeon was 7th in the Derby, Won the Ebor carrying 10stone and the Chester Cup twice, which would mark him as being of group class. Over hurdles he was up against the likes of Bird’s Nest, Night Nurse and Monksfield in the golden age. He would get my vote.
