Who in your opinion is the greatest NH trainer of all time and why.
For me Michael Dickinson Fred Winter and Nicky Henderson have to be up there I’m sure some have other ideas.
January 12, 2009 at 12:53 #203385Why no J.J. O’Neill, Fists?
Colin
January 12, 2009 at 13:07 #203386I said the greatest not the shrewdest
January 12, 2009 at 13:13 #203387Martin Pipe – raised the bar in terms of fitness required, and hence has done more for the welfare of racehorses than any other.
Dickinson second, Nicholls third.
January 12, 2009 at 14:48 #203394Vincent O’Brien’s many Gold Cup and Grand National successes in the 50s, not to mention his countless classic wins, mark him out as arguably the greatest ( and shrewdest ) trainer of all time.
However, Martin Pipe did raise the bar when it comes to NH training and his level of consistency over the many years sets him apart from the others.
In short, for me,Martin Pipe takes the plaudits.

January 12, 2009 at 15:13 #203401The poll is rendered meaningless on account of the shameful omission of Simon T Lewis.

Adoptive father of two. The patron saint of lower-grade fare. A gently critical friend of point-to-pointing. Kindness is a political act.
January 12, 2009 at 15:49 #203410A lack of wins in the championship races which is not unconnected his policy of running (ruining?) talent til they could barely crawl out iof the horsebox would always count against Pipe for me
Ive gone for Nichols.
January 12, 2009 at 16:10 #203412With no option for Marie Laetitia-Mourier there is no point in having this poll
January 12, 2009 at 16:45 #203419Pipe for me too. Changed the way things were done and achieved some truly amazing results with some modest stock.
January 12, 2009 at 18:21 #203429i’m in the pipe camp as well
January 12, 2009 at 18:46 #203437Vincent O’Brien is the pivital training figure in both codes in my opinion. His NH achievements are often forgotten considering his record on the flat.
3 consecutive Gold Cups, 3 consecutive Champion Hurdles and 3 consecutive Aintree Nationals with 3 different horses. He would have dominated the national hunt game if he hadn’t turned his attentions to the flat.
January 12, 2009 at 20:15 #203468As much as i admire M.Pipe, perhaps if he had just won the odd Classic
or 3, then maybe! Vincent O-Brien for me!January 12, 2009 at 20:34 #203471The poll is rendered meaningless on account of the shameful omission of Simon T Lewis.

Ahem, Ahem Jeremy, don’t you mean Edward M Caine!!!
January 12, 2009 at 20:36 #203472My God, I’m totally amazed. I cast my vote, and then looked at the figures. I’d have thought Vincent O’Brien would have got over 80%. Could we please exclude people under the age of 35 from voting, as they are ignorant.
January 12, 2009 at 20:41 #203475Think you’ve got your Captains mixed up there Fister
Tim Forster surely? – the greatest trainer of the slow horse

People disagree with me therefore are ignorant….Oh the arrogance of it all.
January 12, 2009 at 22:04 #203495Indeed – a common failing of the elderly in my experience.
