superb
July 26, 2008 at 11:48 #174880i loved night nurse, but i dont known if he ran on the flat.
Night Nurse ran many times on the Flat. He broke his maiden over 9f at Ripon in June, 1974 and also won a 12f handicap at Carlisle in September, 1975. After his second Champion Hurdle win in 1977, he went for the Chester Cup and ran respectably to finish 5th of 15, 25 lengths behind Sea Pigeon who was giving him a stone.

I’m surprised that nobody (unless I’ve been reading carelessly) has mentioned the classic winner Aurelius. He was a brilliant winner of the St Leger in the 1960s who was trained by Noel Murless. Proving infertile at stud, he was gelded and was – if memory serves – placed in a Champion Hurdle, as well as winning some high quality hurdle races.
There used to be an Aurelius Hurdle at Ascot until fairly recently, to celebrate his achievements: it’s probably lost its status, along with much of racing’s family silverware, by being turned into the Toteswinger John Smith Dubai Airline Heritage Handicap Classic or something equally memorable.
July 26, 2008 at 12:38 #174887Thanks, Darren, for the Youtube link. Now that’s what I call a water jump.
I must put in a good word for National Spirit just after WW2, winner of two Champion Hurdles and fourth in two others, where there was talk of him being got at. Not only did he win 19 hurdles but also 13 flat races, four of which were worth £1,000, which was big bucks then. Not top class on the flat, admittedly, but tough and very popular, running about 50 times under both codes in three and a half years.
One of his Champion Hurdle wins had a horse called Le Paillon in second, who later won the Arc de Triomphe, so that one was pretty versatile too.
July 26, 2008 at 13:53 #174893Darren; what time is the race tomorrow? please please post as soon as possible to say how he got on; I’ve watched Helmacs races on utube….tell him to come back safe!
July 26, 2008 at 18:31 #174928Has anyone mentioned Kribensis?

The race is due off at 5:20 UK time tomorrow, however, last Sunday at Bad Harzburg (it’s a 9 day festival), all races were put back 45 minutes after the annual lake race foxhunting competition got out of hand and one of the dogs ran off towards the Harz Mountains, and they had to suspend racing. He was caught apporaching the third last in the back straight.
I’m actually away tomorrow, and probably won’t be back until about 6:00-ish, but I’ll let everyone know how he gets on. Mind you, knowing how late races go off in Germany, I might get home before it starts!!

July 26, 2008 at 18:58 #174933Good luck with FIEPES SHUFFLE tommorrow, i would expect him to start at odds of about 1,4 has he`s by far the best horse in the race, whilst Schnackenberg is having a great week and her two reps like the track i doubt they have the class of FIEPPES especially on this ground!
July 26, 2008 at 20:33 #174942Darren,
You’re worried about an animal called ‘Flipper’ in a race that is largely about water – am I missing something?

July 26, 2008 at 21:04 #174944One horse race, Sea Pigeon.

Thanks for that Tony. 2 more winners today, but bearing in mind that Christian was 16-10 to be top trainer at the festival, and the fact that Elfi S is running away with things as it stands, I’ve got this fear in the back of my mind that Flipper is going to run out of petrol (2 1/4 miles AND the lake!), and Allegan is going to do what he did to Helmac last year, and grab him on the line. On paper, it’s her two against our two, but neither Flipper or Martimix have run in a lake race before, where both Allegan and Schnackenbergs other runner, Glueckstag, have not only run in lake races before, but are both course and distance winners, so I think it might be a very interesting race. Maybe I’m just being pessimistic, but if Flipper doesn’t win tomorrow, I don’t think it’s the end of the world. The ground was 3,4 today apparently, so it’s pretty much good to firm, and no rain is forecast, so, as you say, that’s one plus point! On a standard track over this distance on this going, Flipper would wipe the floor with them, but I just don’t know how much the lake will take out of him. One thing for sure, it’s a smaller lake than at Hamburg, and not as deep, so if he’s going to win a lake race anywhere, it’s going to be here!!

Mike
Tell you what Mike – I’ve missed it completely!!!!!
With a nickname like that, maybe we should aim him at the 10 metre highboard diving at the Beijing Olympics!! That’s what I CALL a multi-purpose horse!‘Yes, Mr. Findlay, I know you’ve got the Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, but can he win a snow race, a lake race AND perform a 3 1/2 inward tuck somersault with pike? I don’t think so!!!’

July 27, 2008 at 00:56 #174963I can`t trump anyone on the greatest but would suggest Young Snugfit as well worth a mention in the category.
Apart from flat wins over 5 and 6 furlongs won a couple over hurdles and
several races over fences including one over the National fences.July 27, 2008 at 19:39 #175055I’ve just spoken to Christian, and this is what happened:
Basically, Flipper went out in front as usual under his jockey Danny Cook, who according to Christian gave him an excellent and very sensible ride. He came through the lake fine, but approaching the bend turning for home whilst still well in front, Flipper slipped and fell. Danny was thrown from the horse, but I’m delighted to say that both horse and jockey are fine.
Christian did say that he felt Flipper would have definitely won as he was so far clear, and Danny said he still had plenty of juice in the tank. At least we now know that he can handle the lake – whisper it, but apprently, he handled it better than Helmac used to!!!
The win, as expected, went to Allegan. He is to lake races what Hedgehunter is to the Grand National – he’d get round those races blindfolded (although he uncharacteristically unseated in Hamburg). In Flippers absence, he won easily. Martimix, our other runner, didn’t handle the lake too well, and was last of the 4 finishers.

July 27, 2008 at 19:53 #175059Glad to hear he’s ok! was half way through my evening meal when I suddenly remembered about the race…..how do the riders stay on when they are soaked through? isn’t the tack all slippy?
