mm, can you not see that it would be better for racing if it wasn’t where it is today!
Corruption within betting has brought the sport into disrepute and people are turning away, including those who bet.
I will ask again; would a parimutuel pool system with bookmakers removed reduce cheating and provide more funds for the benefit of racing?
February 8, 2007 at 20:11 #28607I suppose gamblers both sides of the Irish Sea have it too good, we have multiple choice traditional bookmakers, tote, exchanges etc.
I dont think a tote monopoly would ever come to pass, even if it is much more benificial to horse racing as a whole (look at hong kong and Japan for instance), as the traditional bookmakers take millions away from the sport. Personally I prefer having a multiple choice.
There is no doubt the introduction of exchanges have encouraged more corruption within racing, even if I use them myself sometimes. There is plenty of apologists for the exchanges out there, but thers no doubt with the ability to lay a horse to lose available, its rife for abuse by unscrupulous owners, trainers and Jockeys alike. The upcoming high profile charges that have been brought against Fallon and co, might bring about a call for a total ban on exchanges if their found guilty. Betfair say their reporting suspicious betting patterns to the powers that be, maybe they are, but their just p**s
–g into a vast ocean of corruption.
But as I have said before Nor, its the ordinary punter who envariably suffers.

February 9, 2007 at 18:40 #28608Madman, sorry to hear about the demise of John Smiths mother. Although I have to say I would rather not watch her dying, not watch Diana dying, not watch Desert Orchid dying and indeed not watch the outsider in a Classified race at Kempton dying. Maybe you should start a new Channel – Dogsbeingrunover TV? ;)
February 9, 2007 at 19:09 #28609
The insulting remarks by Madman Marz about owners are par for the course on internet forums and I’ll limit my comments to asking why he bets at all if he KNOWS it’s all corrupt.
Signed – An owner
Nor,
The idea that a tote monopoly reduces or eliminates corruption is rather undermined by the evidence from the US, where drugs rule and the milkshake was invented, not to mention Hong Kong, where race fixing investigations are amazingly common for a country with two meetings a week.

February 9, 2007 at 20:28 #28610AP
Yes, dreadful that drugs are prevalent in the USA but is race fixing too?
I know little about gambling but I can see it could be relatively easy (race fixing) when dealing in cash with a bookmaker.
However, online, and with the exchanges, a bet needs a card which then leaves an audit trail even though this may be disguised in a variety of accounts.
Can you explain how race fixing works when betting is in a pool system? You mention Hong Kong. Is it the ability to bet outside the pool system that enables this type of corruption to exist there?
March 1, 2007 at 20:46 #28612Looks like things may be getting back to normal on 415 Stateside. E-mails, texts and Dale McKeown.
Does anyone know what’s happening? Clearly getting the US coverage is not working…
March 2, 2007 at 05:43 #28613Where did you hear that Max? If that’s the case, it’s good news. I gave the new US coverage a try but I’ve watched test matches more exciting than that! They must have lost no end of evening viewers.
August 30, 2007 at 15:04 #4965Hi all,
Last week I defended ATR when a fellow forumite criticised ATR and Luke Harvey, and I feel I was justified in defending them.
But I can’t defend the poor performance I have just seen. The 3:00 at Wolverhampton has just ran, the camera panned across all the stalls when the race started and you could clearly see that Danish Blues refused to race, in fact it stayed in the stalls and never moved.
1. The commentator (John Hunt) failed to spot this and never told anyone of the situation. Let me remind you this was the 2nd favourite and would/should have been one of John’s main horses to concentrate on – so to not spot it wasn’t even in the race was very poor. But I am sure John doesn’t need telling this.
2. Sir Bob, who was on course, summed up the race by saying that he was very disappointed with the performance of Danish Blues, saying it just never showed. Yes, I know it never showed lol, but Sir Bob was talking in the sense that he was of the impression that it had ran. Very poor indeed.
It was exactly 6 minutes later, when they handed back to Matt in the studio that Matt told Sir Bob and the viewers that the horse never ran as it failed to come out of the stalls. I would guess that 95% of the viewers spotted this as soon as it happened, yet here with have one of the Countries leading commentaors, and one of the countries leading broadcasters failing to spot it. Very poor indeed in my opinion.
Mike
ps: I am not talking out of my pocket as I put Danish Blues up in my placepot. I am talking facts with regards to the events that unfolded, and then have added my opinion that it was a very poor performance on the commentators and Sir Bob’s part.
August 30, 2007 at 15:25 #113032Similarly I was a bit miffed when Aussie Jim failed to notice what had happened to Take A Bow in his commentary of the Winter Hill at Windsor on Saturday evening.
John has just apologised for missing Danish Blues,a rare error by him to be fair.
August 30, 2007 at 15:27 #113033Yes, to his immense credit John has just apologised live on air, and offered no excuses other than to say he just missed it.
Well done John.
August 30, 2007 at 17:42 #113040Apparently Cashmans gave punters money back but as Chapman said how many people bet with them.
Strange i wanted to watch the race again but oh dear the atr video link of the 3.00 doesnt appear to be working

Lol Steve – they will be too busy doing a voice over for it lol.
Yes, I was a bit disappointed in Matt also to be honest. When Paddy Power or Boyle Sports do concessions for horses not running when coming under starters orders, he praises them to the hilt. All you here from him is, "Well done Paddy Power, well done Boyle Sports – don’t worry if your horse got left in the stalls because these brilliant bookmakers will refund you". But today he was completely different because it was Cashmans, and almost accused them of doing it only because not many people were on lol.

To be fair to Luke he did alright yesterday in the booth so I will see how he goes, I used to love betting on Paddy Power through my digital tv liked their concessions but I hardly bet with them now since they withdrew it. Does anybody use Blue Sq through their set top box im getting sick and tired everytime i press the confirm button when betting and it says price has changed (as they use their own prices but thats another story) and you have to go back and do the bet again and its changed again usually fluctuates from eg a point all the time eg 5-1, 9-2 then back to 5-1 and 9-2 again my record on trying to place the bet is 10 times why cant they stick to the same prices as everyone else
August 31, 2007 at 19:29 #113194Everybody makes mistakes, simple as that. It’s easily forgiven.
September 1, 2007 at 11:45 #113239The race is now on ATR Active replay

Cant believe it wasnt mentioned by John Hunt surely the first thing a commentator does is look to see who gets a slow start from the gate
September 1, 2007 at 11:53 #113241Bet over the phone Steve, the price seldom changes unless you’re betting on an in play event ie. football match, cricket, golf etc. and most bookmakers are freephone these days anyway
