Another example of a horse that ran in the Triumph (same year as Grandouet) and had three full seasons hurdling, runs at Exeter today, Smad Place.
He would have won OK at Huntingdon first time over fences, but unseated at the last – that race was made easy as his main rival went wrong and tailed off. But his jumping had been hesitant at quite a few fences before his exit, often putting in a short stride and losing momentum – I feel he’d be more comfortable going left handed.
But he tries again today, stepped up to three miles on another right handed track and at 1.3 currently on BF, I’d rather be a layer than a backer. The weather might help as ‘low sun’ could see the fences on the far side omitted, leaving just 11 to jump.

But he travelled well enough, pulled a fair bit early, didn’t seem to be 100%, and when asked to make ground on Hinterland in between the last two, did so easily. I’m sure if he didn’t unseat, his speed would have seen him go past Hinterland fairly easily after the last.
The main reason why I wouldn’t be too negative is it seems a fair majority of Henderson’s seem to be needing their first run.
And a stronger run race you’ll see a very different horse.
He’s too classy to dismiss him after his first attempt over fences. - AuthorPosts
