Took Maljimar and The Package ante-post. Normally stick with ante-post selctions, but will prob have a small bet on something else. If I do bet anything else it will be from these, after reluctantly leaving out Don’t Push It, and My Will.
State Of Play – My ante-post selection from last year, ran well enough and I was getting excited for a while. A horse I’ve always liked and followed, Hennessy run was poor though, albeit injured! Looks as nailed on as you can be at this stage to place, and that’s from someone who tries to avoid horses who’ve ran in it before.
Hello Bud – On the face of it, 50-1 looks about right for a 12yo, who hasn’t done much this season, but if STD can get him into the kind of rhythm he was in at Ayr last season, he could run a seriously big race, and sneak a place I think.
Character Building – My ante-post selection from 2 years ago, such an unlucky horse with his injuries. Thought he won with a bit to spare at Cheltenham last year, and conversely, poor this year! Could have seen him running a big race and I was definitely leaning towards him, but the inexplicable booking of Nina Carberry is enough for me to leave him out. She’s very over-rated, and I’m not sure what connections are playing at? If he was mine, I’d have kept Codd, who’s a much better jockey than Carberry…….it’s a bewildering choice to be honest, they had a real chance of winning, but now they’ll have to settle for seventh or eighth, after she gives it too much to do.
Ps Cheltenham Specialist, if you’re really a serious enough punter to put £750 each way on a horse, then you wouldn’t be stupid enough to put it on one ridden by Nina Carberry. I’m sorry, I don’t believe you.
April 8, 2010 at 14:53 #288568Jeez, that Sam Twiston-Davies was a nutcase going off so fast in the Foxhunters. Do you reckon he’ll be getting a spanked bottom before riding in the GN?
April 8, 2010 at 15:46 #288582I guessed there was going to be about 10-12 finishers in the Foxhunters, but to see a number as low as 9 was rather surprising, so right now my guess for the National is about 13 finishers.
April 8, 2010 at 19:17 #288659Nail the colours to the GN mast time; bets placed since 23rd March, all at NRNB:
The Package and Arbor Supreme to win at 20s and 25s respectively
Comply or Die e/w at 28s
Irish Raptor e/w at 40s
Maljimar e/w at 40s
Erics Charm e/w at 50s
Ollie Magern e/w at 150s
Mr Pointment e/w at 100s
Royal Rosa e/w at 150s
all e/w at 1/4 odds 1st 5.Looks like RR won’t get a run; must be doubts about Mr.P as well i guess.
Good luck to all
April 8, 2010 at 20:09 #288681Well Folks
Since my Grand National Banker (If there could be such a thing) Chief Dan George is not competing I have searched the field and reckon the winner will come from one of:
Niche Market –
Irish National Winner and 3rd in Hennessey. Not a very brave selection.Dream Alliance –
Welsh National Winner and 2nd in 2007 Hennessey. Very moody horse but if he performs can very easily land this.My Will –
Third last year when strongly fancied and 2 pounds better off. Once rated as high as 161 so if reproducing close to that form will definitely be in the shake up.Hello Bud –
Scottish National Winner last year when beating my original selection Chief Dan George. Carrying 3 pounds less than when winning the Scots. All of these selections have shown some racecourse form this season having at least ran into a place, which is more than can be said of:
Comply or Die
Character Building
State of Play
Ollie Magern
Irish Raptor
Mr Pointment
FlintoffWhich all made my not very short list.
April 8, 2010 at 23:22 #288739Its….
THE PACKAGE E/W for me.
16/1 still available. Very nice weight, will like the ground and usually jumps well in big fields and can be kidded round and then erode the leaders before taking it up for victory. Jockey’s a previous winner of the contest too.
Only worry is the extreme distance – could make or break him.
Best of EU to you all.

April 9, 2010 at 08:31 #288776So, do people reckon Silver Birch’s connections withdrew after receiving a brown envelope, or did it out of the goodness of their hearts?
That has provided the elbow room for the dominoes to fall over.
Mr Pointment withdrawn to get Cerium in the field.
Abbeybraney withdrawn to get Royal Rosa in the field.
April 9, 2010 at 10:17 #288801omigod; just got back from work..is RR running, then? wish I’d topped up my 100/1 with 150/1 yesterday! This race just gets more fascinting by the hour……
April 9, 2010 at 10:18 #288803Silver Birch not getting in simply takes the piss.
April 9, 2010 at 10:21 #288804A reserve system is always going to be open to abuse and to think some want reserves to be more widespread and even on the day.
On this occasion I don’t have a problem as it’s not too much different to having 24 hour decs but why not have 24 hour decs in the first place?April 9, 2010 at 10:28 #288806So, do people reckon Silver Birch’s connections withdrew after receiving a brown envelope, or did it out of the goodness of their hearts?

The phoneline must have been red hot between those 2 stables this morning!
April 9, 2010 at 10:38 #288808No need for Silver Birch’s connections to take an envelope. If Silver Birch had been left in he wouldnt have got a run. He runs today. The 2 horses in the 40 would only have been withdrawn to allow in Cerium and Royal Rosa. Keeping Silver Birch in would have just been to spite those 2.
April 9, 2010 at 11:59 #288844Betfair have opened the 2011 Grand National market, if anyone’s interested.

Yes, but SB’s owner now loses his entry fees, whilst they would have been returned if SB had been eliminated.
April 9, 2010 at 12:09 #288851I’m sure the entry fees were looked after (probably on the double by both the Wylies and Wilsons if Gordon Elliott was involved)!

Well thats a very good point!
April 9, 2010 at 16:31 #288929So, Royal Rosa sneaks in – the trainer was very keen on ensuring he got in – i’m on at 150s from a couple of weeks ago – guess it’s got no hope, but i detect from the last few weeks’ posts on here we’re all looking for the next ‘Mon Mome’!
Seems like the money has come for The Package this afternoon – will beat the ‘age’ part of the National trends if it wins.
