Big John did say on the Morning Line on National day that punters should take a price because National horses rarely drift. I say Big John because I can’t spell McCririck.
Most of the once a year punters I spoke to took the price on their selections.
I did actually feel for betting shop staff, I popped into a BetFred to check some results & heard them explain that ‘each way’ is twice the stake about 50 times in 5 minutes. 25 of those times to the same person.
April 17, 2010 at 20:40 #290878I would image that most once a year punters were delighted with their 10/1 on the McCoy winner.
It is perfectly reasonably to question that if each of them was given a ‘Table of Odds’ before they walk into the bookies would they still place a bet – I don’t know – but you know once a year do these things don’t really matter.
What a load [expletive] on here.
There are people up and down this country that backed the winner and are over the moon to have done so…..is it right the odds they were returned…no….but do they care?….no….let them enjoy their moment….
Pompete,
Don’t Push It’s SP was 10/1.
But what if every bookmaker in the country, paid every novice punter out £10 for every £1 bet. Effectively paying out 9/1.Every novice punter would be delighted to get their winnings
, in ignorance of being robbed.
Yet by working to such a massive over-round, this robbing of every SP punter is, in my opinion, exactly what’s happened. Only the SP should’ve been 11/1 or possibly 12/1, rather than 10/1.
If someone is not going to know if he/she is robbed, does that mean it is o.k. to rob them?

Thanks to West End Racing at Newbury today.
The only bookie I saw offering 1/4 the odds first four in the Spring Cup.

There’s no excuse for it other than highway robbery. I made the very same point about the overround in the BBC commentary thread.

You didn’t look very hard then Ginger – 1/4, 1-2-3-4 was the standard ew terms on the race and I could name you a good dozen bookmakers standing at Newbury today who were offering as much.
April 18, 2010 at 00:40 #290911Don’t know about the rails, but I looked around 3/4 of the tatts bookies. Think there might have been one other, but he seemed to be working to a higher over-round. Certainly wasn’t "standard". Most seemed to be a 5th.

That’s all right Anthony, Ginger can’t spell emphasise!

Spelling was never my strong point.Just seemed a word that should have a "Y" in there somewhere.
Value Is EverythingApril 18, 2010 at 11:15 #290950Fair enough GT – I guess you’re right.
I suppose I’m just fed up with everyone moaning about everything all the time. I really do wonder at times why anyone bothers with this sport at all, unless of course there is some kind of psychological link between an attraction to horseracing and being a miserable git.
As I say I thought the GN was great and I know many people (once a year punters) that backed McCoy and were delighted to have won and the whole GN occasion was a great advert for the sport – shame I should really now go and tell them they was robbed and what mugs they are
April 18, 2010 at 14:00 #290977There are ‘mugs’ in all walks of life Pompete. It’s a fact. Everyone here started off as a mug punter, me included. And there are those who will gladly skin them for every last penny they can get.
It’s the annual leeching I have a problem with, not the less informed themselves. The bookies would never try to run a 155% book in a 10 runner maiden at Leicester, as they know they would never get away with it. Their asses would be in a sling.
If they are allowed to get away with it at Aintree, where the average joe has his one bet every year, what kind of advert is that for the sport? A sport that will willingly rape noobs of their cash at the first opportunity?April 18, 2010 at 15:22 #290992There are ‘mugs’ in all walks of life Pompete. It’s a fact. But, what is really going on here?
Is it those that got paid out on their one bet per year at 10’s rather than what 14’s – 16’s that are the mugs or us lot on here?
Here is a little clue, have a look in the ‘Big Race Discussion’ section and choose ten races at random – I’d be surprised if one poster in those ten threads picked the winner in say 4 of them.
As for someone preaching the ‘science’ of value but does like knowing their P&L, please save me from this ******* madhouse.
April 18, 2010 at 19:27 #291046Ginger, I use the term ‘standard place terms’ as 1/4 1,2,3,4 was indeed the standard place terms and the one which was applied to off-course markets. I’m glad that you said you didn’t check the rails, as your initial statement was well off. Of the 21 books on the rails, I’d say three quarters were betting 1/4, 1,2,3,4. In the ring I’m pretty sure there were more than one, I’d expect at least a few more than one of the 33 books to bet to terms as well.

April 19, 2010 at 11:39 #291150Pompete,
I knocked out the winner cos of its weight in February which left me with Erics Charms
and Arbor SupremeI went against my weight rule on Black Appalachi and had a small saver on that but totaly struck off Dont Push It weeks ago.
If that makes me a mug punter then so be it and I’m happy for those folk who won a tenner on the AP bet. Thats the mugs bet usually but fair play to them, it wasnt on this occasion. They should have won enough money for a good night out not to cover a fish supper.
AP wouldnt give the horse a 10/1 chance cos he didnt fancy breaking his National duck in his Telegraph column on the Morning of the race.
April 19, 2010 at 13:11 #291162Sorry Jibs, nothing personal meant against you or anyone else. I’ve been in a funny mood recently and I think I’m turning into a miserable, moaning old git.
I think I’ll start a thread moaning about something – not sure what yet but I’ll think of something – that might cheer me up
April 19, 2010 at 15:47 #291182Forums are the home of whinging auld gits buddy.
I will try and be more positive for the future!
