I believe it was that emergency services are no longer going to be available

If it turns out that the season can be forseen as a virtual washout for a long period, to prove who’s worthwhile for future breeding, why not plan Guineas, Derby, Oaks & Leger resticted to 4yos in 2021.

If they’re that keen to fulfil the potential of their charges they’ll do it.

If not they’ll just fantasize what might have been and send them to stud anyway.

    I.

Boris Johnson basically alluded to no emergency services at any unnecessary events and then very soon after the GN gets cancelled. It’s got to be the same logic for the flat meetings. I don’t think it’s even a question of the number of ambulances. It’s none and Racing can’t go ahead like that? What is happening at the moment with the meetings this week behind closed doors? Presumably, they have ambulances there though?

I am really digging to find any positive notion that the flat season can go ahead, but I can’t find it!

The only thing I would say, is that The Kentucky Derby is not cancelled, it’s actually postponed until September. Maybe we can start the flat season in July and delay it by 2 months? At least then we’d get in the most important parts of it.

Most (if not all) of the ambulances at Racecourses day in day out are private ones which is why they can continue with these minimal numbers at the moment.
When the demand by either the racecourse or gov. exceeds that minimal requirement then racing has to give over, hence the GN meeting.

Sorry when i say flat racing i mean the initial period of Guineas/Derby, which is arguably the biggest period of the season for the flat with the breeding permutations which come from it.

The current prediction is the virus peaking around June time IIRC, even if that’s true (rose-tinted glasses etc) nothing will be getting back up and running for a good few months after that.

The scenario if flat racing did happen behind closed doors is all fine and well in a short term but as soon as a jockey catches the virus that halts the whole game.

It is true a large number of race meetings are covered by private medical providers, however not all these providers are CQC registered – if they are not CQC registered then they are not permitted to transport patients to hospital, therefore NHS backup is required.

At Towcester for example the private ambulance would move a jockey to the medical room – allowable because the transfer is on private land – however if the jockey needed to go to hospital then an NHS ambulance from EMAS was needed.

Ascot for example uses 100% NHS ambulance cover, Aintree uses a mixture of NHS and private

The only logic for cancelling the Grand National but starting back up in time for the Guineas Meeting is that to the BHA flat racing is much more important.
