Not surprised. Been expecting it for days now. Hopefully they might look at restaging it later in the year maybe.

Blackgold, no chance of that happening
March 16, 2020 at 21:44 #1486344Agree, there is no chance of the meeting taking place later in the year. It just has to be written off.
We need to start preparing for more cancellations. If the government does not get a grip quickly, I would be doubtful about the Guineas and Derby going ahead.
March 16, 2020 at 21:59 #1486346Why does the government have to get a grip they have advised the public what to do what more can they do it is now up to the public to take the advice on board.
Has every government in the world got to “get a grip”.
March 16, 2020 at 22:06 #1486347OK, poorly expressed but what I mean is if the situation continues to get worse there is no way the restrictions are going to be lifted in early April. It is not practical for big meetings to take place behind closed doors. Punchestown looks doubtful and so does Newmarket.

No, some of them already have. It’s slowing down in parts of Asia.
March 16, 2020 at 23:14 #1486352All my ante post bets on Grand National has been returned, yet the Lincoln has not. If racing cancelled for the foreseeable future it should be all.

March 16, 2020 at 23:22 #1486355Crikey; so have mine. I have never before been so upset at seeing money appear in my betting account. I know the race is unimportant compared to what is happening but, if I felt wretched before I feel even worse now. The highlight of my year.
March 17, 2020 at 01:11 #1486359It’s a big disappointment to lose the Grand National and what will follow is even more of a disappointment for flat racing fans like myself looking forward the Craven Meeting which is now at risk along with the Guineas meeting, Derby and Royal Ascot..
At least jumps fans had The Cheltenham Festival which just scraped through and I must admit it was one of the best for many years.Being a badge holder at Newmarket I was looking forward to seeing Pinatubo run in the 2000 Guineas now doubtful that will happen and it’s unknown when people will be allowed to go racing again in the months to come.
I’m not an expert on this but surely the big flat meetings must go ahead even without the crowds because if all that prize money is lost owners, for one, may turn away from horse racing and the industry itself could go into freefall..having said I know that big racecourses rely on the crowds and especially cooperate entertaining to carry them but everyone is having to make sacfices..will they?
All other plans made for the year ahead now seem to be a distant dream as health and family take priority until this virus has blown itself out. Stay safe. Jac

Yes, if an Ante Post bet doesn’t run because the meeting is cancelled than 100% refund

March 17, 2020 at 08:55 #1486364Boris did his best to keep this country moving and to avoid financial Armageddon but clearly this country doesn’t have the backbone for that anymore hence yesterdays clamp down.
May even be Goodwood before racing comes back.March 17, 2020 at 08:56 #1486365Jac, I’d have thought it would be more likely that they would try to run the big races in some form or other to maintain the breeding industry. Whether that will happen or not is another matter. Indeed any prediction about what will happen – regarding anything at all – seems futile at the moment!
March 17, 2020 at 09:16 #1486366I was listening to Racing Debate yesterday. One racecourse representative said that unless the Government
shut down racing – they will continue behind closed doors. This is because he said that the racecourse
insurance will not cover self closure. The same fate has befallen the music industry, festivals are not
covered to stop unless Government shutdown. Racing Post say the Tattersalls Sales / Aintree Sales still
going ahead. If you consign store horses for the Derby Sales etc you will have a very big headache coming.March 17, 2020 at 10:49 #1486371What I am struggling to get my head around, is what is the logic in cancelling the Grand National and not running it behind closed doors but going ahead with Guineas Day/Derby Day etc behind closed doors? There is none surely?
Therefore, the flat season is close to being a write off surely? Even if it came back for Royal Ascot, all the horses would be FTO and Ascot would be almost pointless.
Are they hoping that the seriousness changes slightly so they can cover up this fact and make some excuses to run the 2000 Guineas behind closed doors?
The financial implications of this are unthinkable. Denying Pinatubo the chance to make millions as a sire for connections by not running the 2000 Guineas for example.
They have got to find a way to run the flat season behind closed doors, to at least keep it running, but there is no logic I can see to that if they don’t run the Grand National behind closed doors. Unless anyone can point out to me where that logic is?
March 17, 2020 at 12:20 #1486375The main concern with Racing going ahead behind closed doors is the reliance it has on Ambulance services etc.
I don’t know this for sure but The flat boys probably don’t need as many ambulances etc. legally as jumps as the dangers are significantly reduced?
There’s the breeding aspect of the flat also, but i’m not 100% sure how urgent this is to continue in the grand scheme of the world situation.
I would say it’s definitely odds on for the flat racing not to go ahead. Different jurisdiction but if the US are cancelling the Kentucky Derby that gives you an indication of the problems flat racing could have in going ahead.
