It was Placenet. Sorry my post didn’t make it clear. I’ve edited it now to make the name stand out.

Empire Steel running at Kelso today for Sandy Thomson in a 2m5½f Class 2 five-runner affair off a mark of 142, with main rival being Richmond Lake.

Empire Steel won without too much ado after two rivals fell at the final three fences.

Punchestown on Sunday has another interesting race, with Any Second Now (not entered for what would be a third successive tilt at the Grand National) top weight for the 16-runner Grand National Trial Handicap Chase (Listed Race) over 3m3f.

However, that top weight is just 144 (ASN ran off 167 in April, but has dropped heavily after two midfield completes in the Foxrock (listed) at Navan behind Embittered and finishing 8th in the Thyestes. How much of that is natural decline for this 12 yo, or Walsh proving a point, well, maybe Sunday will explain further.

From a much larger field earlier in the week, there are five who are entered for Aintree. DUNBOYNE (138, tailed off in the National last year after being short-headed in the 2023 Thyestes then following that up with a 4th in the Kim Muir) and FRONTAL ASSAULT (138, was four pounds higher a year ago but is another out of form, with only a fourth in the Porterstown in December halting the slow but steady slide down the weights) are the two highest-profile challengers, both trained by Gordon Elliott.

Three near the bottom of this handicap will need to win to get in, I suspect. ROYAL THIEF is another Elliott in the Gigginstown colours but is 10 lbs down from the 138 when headed two out in last year’s Kim Muir when finishing sixth. This season has been 88FP. Nothing against the horse, but this represents the bloat of Elliott horses amongst the entries. Who would be that interested in seeing Royal thief line up in the final 34 at Liverpool? Would have to win here to really feel like he has earned a place – or is that too harsh of me?

FAKEIRA left Elliott’s yard in December and is winless in 13 chase starts. Now with Eoin Griffin, is running off 125 and is therefore below the minimum threshold of 130 required to qualify, though the handicapper may well add the Irish tax on Tuesday. Fakeira is 40/1 for Sunday’s event, so a more interesting candidate even with two pounds fewer to carry is WHERE IT ALL BEGAN, another chase novice for whom this is by far their biggest career test to date. You probably do not need to guess who trains this one, too…and Jack Kennedy has chosen to rid this one.

I don’t think Empire will stay , I’d truly love Sandy to get a big run though after what happened last year

Anyone know whether Ben Harvey will keep the ride on Mahler Mission?
Only just over 100 rides over fences.

OK, with today being weights day, a question. Why, apart from tradition, are the weights announced so far ahead of the race? Why can’t it wait until two weeks before, or after the Cheltenham Gold Cup, say?

It’s an absolute nonsense, if you ask me. So, please tell me why I am wrong, without resorting to ‘it’s always been done that way’ as a reply.

    Quelle Farce…

A few years ago they were going through a regrettable phase of trying to make an occasion out of the weight reveal. Think FA Cup draw, but more embarrassing. The most painful example being about 8 years ago when they decided to hold a Facebook livestream at 8 in the evening in front of a crowd of disinterested drunks. It was excruciating to watch, and they clearly knew it because they’ve not attempted it since.

I too don’t understand the need to maintain this outdated tool that allows trainers to lie to punters until the middle of February, but the higher ups clearly still see value in it.

Probably because they don’t want to discourage Grand National horses running at Cheltenham.

The Panda is up 3lbs from his Irish mark and that means he will almost certainly get a run. Just needs the rain to stay away.

Worried that Kittys Light won’t even get the opportunity to run now. Fancied him strongly for this and he’s the first horse I’ve ever backed antepost for it.
