What did Elusive Kate do to Sky lantern?..Gosden is the worst conveyor of accurate information and the best at misinformation.

Richard Hughes’s wife also tweeted this yesterday! What goes around tends to come around. Neither Dettori nor Kirby covered themselves in glory in the race but it is time Gosden moved on. Kirby isn’t the neatest but jibes about him being “a winter AW jockey” are unbecoming of Gosden.

Surprise, Surprise! Postponed’s owner did not look favourably on Adam Kirby’s lack of cool on the horse in the Hardwick. Kirby putting his own interests (getting back at Dettori for grabbing the box seat position in the early part of the race) before the interests of the owner (having the horse balanced and relaxed to achieve the best possible finishing position in the Group 2 race), was always likely to upset the owner. Although Kirby is Sheikh Mohammed Obaid’s retained jockey, he has been jocked off in the Group 1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes on Saturday in favour of Andrea Atzeni. I hope Kirby gets the ride back soon, now that he knows the consequences of lettings his emotions get the better of his skills.

You seem to be overlooking the bigger picture here. Sheikh Obaid is a cousin and personal friend of Sheikh Mohammed (I am sure I read somewhere Obaid actually owns Dubai for instance, although I am happy to stand corrected on that). The latter has been one of Gosden’s main paymasters for many of years, even to the extent that many Gosden runners have this year been carrying the Godolphin blue. As I have mentioned before, Gosden’s “boy” Buick got the Godolphin job ahead of Kirby, presumably with Gosden instrumental behind the scenes. Buick’s strike rate has been a lot lower than Kirby’s, so one imagines Gosden’s criticism of Kirby was also an attempt to take some of the spotlight away from Buick’s less than impressive strike rate compared to Kirby, and a subtle suggestion that Kirby’s success for the boys in blue was largely due to him being an “all-weather” jockey.

It seems to me Obaid is simply towing the Godolphin line here. If he was that unhappy with Kirby why not sack him altogether? Also Cumani seemed to imply the other day that Dettori’s decision to sit two off the rail was unusual and that most jockeys in that situation would adopt a rails position – suggesting Kirby was equally surprised that Dettori did not tuck in. As I have said before, if Dettori had not played silly buggers and instead moved onto the rail he would have had a perfect tow into the race behind the eventual winner, rather than becoming boxed in by Kirby.

As I have said before, if Dettori had not played silly buggers and instead moved onto the rail he would have had a perfect tow into the race behind the eventual winner, rather than becoming boxed in by Kirby.

Being wise after the event is not wisdom at all. Given what Dettori wanted to do in the race, he probably thought it was smarter to track the 6/4 favourite two wide of the fence, rather than a 12/1 outsider on the rail. Not being able to see into the future, he probably thought he could follow Telescope and pounce late, rather than be trapped behind an outsider if he went to the rail and allowed Kirby to keep him in until too late. He would have been daft to choose the slot on the rail behind a 12/1 shot when he could allow the favourite to take him into the race. Nobody knew then that Snow Sky would run far better than Telescope. Dettori was not playing “silly buggers”, he was putting his horse in the best position to win the race.

Dettori has had a successful career as a jockey because he can use his brain when riding a horse, not because he can see into the future. That is why he has been given the opportunity to win 15 English Classics, 11 Breeders Cup Races, 3 Japan Cups and 3 Arc De Triomphes, as well as hundreds of other big races. He is not perfect, not even close to perfect as a jockey. But he had exceptional skills as a jockey when he first rode 100 winners in a season twenty-five years ago and retains most of those skills now. Plus, he has the wisdom that twenty-five years riding in top class racing imparts.

I was referring to Kirby’s record for Godolphin compared with Buick’s (35% v 24%). Of course Buick will have a better strike rate being employed by one of the biggest owners (Godlophin) and biggest yards (Gosden) in the country. My point being that I believe Gosden’s criticism is partly motivated by a desire to belittle Kirby (the jockey Sheikh Mo rejected) at a time when a lot of punters question the decision as Buick is hardly settling the world alight in the Royal Blue silks.

Dettori may well be a great jockey, I am has happy as the next person to see him back in the big time, but on this occasion he allowed himself to become embroiled in a fight over the wrong lane as it panned out. Yes hindsight is a great thing, but it is all we have, in the same way its all Gosden has, and he seems to refuse to address the point that had Dettori settled his mount on the fence then he would have finished closer. Him and Dettori go back a long way so I suppose it is easy to criticise poor Kirby rather than publicly criticise Dettori.

The way that Gosden “talks at” interviewers rather than to them really annoys me….it assumes that he is the only person with an opinion and that the rest of us are know nothings…he may be smiling when he does it but there is nothing but self serving humour there and certainly nothing self depreciating…..I for one don’t need Gosden to bore me with his smart arsed lectures…..quite happy to listen to a conversation but not a lecture.

I have heard, admittedly second hand, that at least one high profile racing presenter loathes him for precisely the reasons you state.

But what the hell do you or I know. Gosden was proven 100% right about slagging off Kirby for the Postponed ride today when Eagle Top, given a supremely measured ride by Dettori, came and won the King George hard held!

Even though the “Italian horse” (in Gosden’s words) forced him to go wide.
