It’s the G3 Gordon Richards Stakes at Sandown on Saturday, one of the first big 10f turf race of the season. This ones got a bit of an upside down look to it. Decent G3 class horses Buccellati & Charlie Farnsbarns are having to concede weight to proven G1 performers Pipedreamer & Tartan Bearer. Much will probably depend on who’s the fittest. Final Declarations below. Any ideas ?
1 (6) Buccellati 5 9-3v W Buick
2 (2) Charlie Farnsbarns 5 9-3 M Dwyer
3 (1) Bushman 5 9-0 R Hughes
4 (7) Halicarnassus 5 9-0 S Hitchcott
5 (8) Indian Days 4 9-0 A Munro
4 (7) Pipedreamer 5 9-0 J Fortune
7 (4) Steele Tango 4 9-0 D O´Neill
8 (3) Tartan Bearer 4 9-0 R MooreBetting Forecast: 5/4 Tartan Bearer, 5/2 Pipedreamer, 11/2 Buccellati, 10/1 Charlie Farnsbarns, 14/1 Halicarnassus, 16/1 Steele Tango, 25/1 Bushman, 50/1 Indian Days

Tartan Bearer may have the better form but this is Pipedreamer’s trip, plus John Gosden’s horses are in tip top form. SMS has had a bit of seconditis recently, with a few of his horses looking like they needed the run.
Third fav Buccellati seems to do better in the Autumn and the rest can’t posssibly win. Can they?
Pipedreamer is crying out to be backed at that price but where did it come from?

Tartan Bearer is different class to Pipedreamer, a horse that could/should
have won the Derby against a Cambridgeshire winner!April 25, 2009 at 02:58 #223506AnonymousInactive- Total Posts 17716
Well the flat really isn’t my game but Pipedreamer seems a bit better than your normal Cambridgeshire winner.
John Gosden took the City and Suburban and Blue Riband Trial Stakes at Epsom and seems to have the right horses fit to grab these better prizes at the moment.
His form is as good if not better than Tartan Bearers at this trip and he’s no where near 7/2 as was indicated above. 7/4 is the best I have seen so far.
If Kalahari KIng wins then I will consider Pipedreamer as a bet to nothing and take my chances.

He is indeed but he"s No Halling! i wont be betting in the race as both horses have far bigger engagements to come, so we are guessing to who may be the fittest, but on form a Derby horse will beat a Cambridgeshire winner everytime!
April 25, 2009 at 17:02 #223583I think Tartan Bearer may just have the measure of Pipedreamer today.
Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
April 25, 2009 at 17:07 #223587"Should’ve been" Derby winner vs Cambridgeshire winner is a little bit of a silly comment in respect to the two horses in question here. Pipedreamer is a geniune group horse and a horse capable of running into places at group one level at this trip he is far from just a handicapper.
Tartan Bearer was runner up in the Derby fair enough but disappointed a bit in the Irish equivalent and hasn’t been seen since. His progress / well being has to be taken on trust. He has won at ten furlongs though which is a plus.
There is a problem in that there is no obvious pace in the race. It could end up being a race that throws up a funny result or it could go to a horse that gets the first run.
Another difficult race to call because of the fact that it could be a funnily run race. If I had to back one though I’d be on Pipedreamer as the first two do look in a different league on known form.
April 25, 2009 at 18:19 #223596Lay Tartan Bearer
Back Pipedreamer to winApril 25, 2009 at 19:05 #223606I’ve had a little interest in Charlie Farnsbarns who I feel is often underrated and if you catch him on a going day he is a group horse. The ground won’t inconvenience him either. Speculative but I really have never warmed to either of the front two in the betting.
April 25, 2009 at 19:22 #223609Cor what a race. Not a great deal of pace on and it looked as though Pipedreamer had stolen it. Tartan Bearer fair play to him he battled but he needed every inch of that trip.
April 25, 2009 at 19:40 #223615I think Tartan Bearer may just have the measure of Pipedreamer today.
If only i could be so diplomatic! Tartan Bearer showed against all the odds
today the talent he has! King George anyone?April 25, 2009 at 20:28 #223619AnonymousInactive- Total Posts 17716
Surely not, TAPK – he has, after all, only just beaten a Cambridgeshire winner
April 25, 2009 at 22:08 #223628I dont really study or watch the flat as much as i do the jumps racing, mainly because i love jumps racing. However, last season i did watch a lot more flat racing than i have done recently and i thought Tartan Bearer was excellent in last years’ Derby.
He was very good again today, to pick Pipedreamer up in the final furlong showed a very good turn of speed, when he looked beaten. It was a very clever ride from Jimmy Fortune on Pipedreamer, but Tartan Bearer seems a classy sort, and connections must be very happy with that start to the season today.

Over the Cambridgeshire winners ideal trip and Ground and the way the race was set up for the Pipedreamer! Oh yes The Ante -Post King knows a
class horse when he sees one!April 25, 2009 at 23:21 #223635AnonymousInactive- Total Posts 17716
So you’ve gone from assuring us that Tartan Bearer was a league apart from Pipedreamer, emphasising the fact that he was a Derby runner-up taking on a Cambridgeshire winner, to claiming everything was against him when said handicapper (a term implied, if not expressed explicitly) runs him to a short-head?
You’re the king of something, but it has nothing to do with ante-post.
And, just for future reference, attempting to brag about spotting the class in a horse who finished second in the Derby doesn’t cover you in glory. That said, I am mystified as to why you aren’t churning out book after book, and running the world’s most successful tipping service, given your supreme talents and obvious superiority over the remainder of the racing world.
I used to enjoy getting a rise out of Fists when he sat himself on TRF’s Pedestal of Equine Revolution, but you’re different gravy.
April 25, 2009 at 23:45 #223637Really disappointed that this wasn’t shown on Ch4; Tartan Bearer was my favourite horse of last season and was hoping to see the race today. Didn’t he get really cut up in the Irish Derby by the O’Brien horse?

Equi, dont think for one minute i am gifted, its all down to hard study!
Tartan is a better horse over 11/2m and Pipey is a 11/4m specialist, so i
expected it to be a close run race today, fitness pending but i am using abit of foresight here and suggesting Tartan is a King George horse and
thats what being the Ante-post king is all about! Oneday when you grow up
you too could be one!!!!!!!!!!! -
