Good morning,I have been a member here for a while but never commented, but can’t keep quiet on this subject I’m afraid! As an intro, I worked in various yards for 30 yrs- racing, studs, yearling prep, breaking and hunt yards and loved every minute. I love to follow racing now, have no interest in gambling but every interest in horse welfare. I love to see fit healthy TBs galloping and jumping well, doing what they’re bred to do. But this GE stuff has sickened me. I have my own thoughts on what us going on in that pic but nobody else seems to have mentioned it. I hate to cast aspersions on the characters of Elliot and O’Leary, but does anybody think O’Leary insures his horses?

I believe such insurance only covers horses on a racecourse , not in the yard or gallop

I get the feeling the racing world feels its had its penance of a few days of bad publicity, and its back to treating everyone else like mushrooms again now.

Matt Chapman mentioned guarding against “the anti racing brigade” in his column yesterday. The Elliott “punishment” is a whitewash. As someone mentioned above, it has been good of Cheveley Park to step in and take punitive measures against Elliott, as nobody else has bothered to.

Very disappointing. I’m more gutted than I was when the photo came out.

I wouldn’t think so- when you have a lot of horses it is probably not financially viable to insure them- cheaper to pay as you go for them. Also, it’s probably too risky to insure a disappointing one for a large amount then bump them off- a claims investigator would be all over that. O’Leary’s usual MO is to round up the older and less successful ones in the autumn and sell them at Doncaster. The ŕetiring ones get the options offered to Mouse Morris when First Lieutenant retired.

Some might say that, seeing as in racing generally (and especially Ireland) they seem to prefer to make the real examples out of lesser-known soft targets, if a big trainer gets six months but can have the horses all stay where he can see them from his bedroom window every day of his “ban,” Rob James will probably be sentenced to execution by lethal injection….but I couldnt possibly comment!

And this thread has racing fans on it …. lol

Hes been punished plenty, however you look at it whether or not hes training or not, hes banned on paper for 6 months… 0 winners to his name in that time

Hes lost 2 massive yard sponsorships

Hes lost millions of £s worth of horses/ prize money

    Hes lost his image

Hes most certainly lost any champion trainer chance for years to come.

And you lot are shouting for more

Get a grip, disappointing to see this from most of you “racing fans” punishment has been dealt.

End of. Worse than the antis.

Go attack the trainers who dope “living” horses to the point of almost no return

Ham well said, I concur but will add the chips…

Elliot is not the brightest spark.

“I will never again disrespect a horse living or dead and I will not tolerate it in others.”

His ‘mistaken’ words indicate he has disrespected a living horse.

I agree entirely with The Tatling Cheekily’s comments above.

Just two things I forgot to say earlier. The movement of horses from the yard should have had no bearing on the judgement and the only thing I am concerned about regarding the taking of the photograph is the disappointment that it wasn’t released two years earlier leaving Elliott two years to carry on as if nothing had happened. Let’s face it he only apologised because he was exposed, he would happily have seen it buried forever. Sadly, many in racing only interested in image, would have thought the same.

Perhaps it is worth thinking about the money he didn’t lose as opposed to what he might lose now.

I think it is good that ‘racing fans’ can think outside the box/bubble and not even attempt to excuse the indefensible.

Good to see you crawl out of the woodwork to fully expose yourself once again stilvi.

The emotions of this case that brought you back were the same in play as in the judgment and the movement of horses was certainly weighed, also the possible witch hunt, and Tom Cobley also took to the scales.

I don’t know how to do quotes but Gamble says about disrespecting live horses – look closely at the pic, Morgan was not a healthy horse before he died, he has a muscular neck, big belly and a back end that doesn’t match – jutting out hip bones and muscle wastage on the quarters. He looks like a horse with a pelvic injury. I think there is far more to this than merely sitting on a dead horse, tho that in itself is sick enough. I also think it shouldn’t be brushed under the carpet to protect racings image.

I’d say to ham and others who react the same way, please don’t conflate criticism of the IHRB with personal ill wishes for Gordon Elliott.

Ludicrous to suggest anyone who doesn’t want Elliott to be seen by the wider public to endure a real and meaningful sanction isn’t a real racing fan.

Biggest wider public boos in sitting rooms of the week at the Cheltenham Festival – horses still at Elliott’s yard winning.

Biggest cheers of the week – anything owned by Cheveley Park Stud winning.

Cheveley Park have displayed an honour and principle spectacularly lacking in a lot of people in racing.

Moving yards this close to the event won’t help their horses Cheltenham chances one bit, but they have acted on a point of general principle and I respect them for it.

I rarely have the slightest clue what the poster ‘Gamble’ is rambling on about. Am I a bit thick?

Agree the ‘punishment’ is lenient and will be seen as such by the wider public, already the Telegraph has published an article saying the fact GE can still be involved in training despite being banned shows that horse racing doesn’t care about the animals and there is a piece in the Times today about this case and idea welfare issues.
The damage done to the sport of horse racing is massive and people within the industry need to realise that.

Jan I surmise you may be female and a Scorpio to boot, but what I can say for real is that you possess a very fine eye and that eye of yours is a true asset and has brought a different complexion to this case. Add my clever quote analysis about disrespecting live horses and we have some new bones to look at. I will tell you exactly where I stand between the living and the dead a little later – if I am still amongst the former.

I cannot blame your very fine eye for misconstruing or misundestanding the complexity of the edit function as I was foxed for months on this.

‘ You press the posting space as if posting then in the grey highlighted area above the post space you will see the word B-QUOTE press on that and like magic you will see it copied on the posting space. ( You first need to have copied the words you want to insert and you do this by pressing down on the words and highlighting as many as you like and pressing copy).

You now press down hard on the posting space and the word paste will appear so press that and hey Presto your quote appears. Then press down as if to write further and up to the grey area again and select and press B-QUOTE and it should then appear and finalise your Quote. You can then write underneath. You can only put a quote at the beginning of a post – I think.
