An off the wall ‘tip’ for Goodwood tomorrow. I don’t suppose many punters check on the wind direction before deciding on their bets, but tomorrow is one of those days when it might be significant. The forecast from both the sites I use (Accuweather and BBC) predicts a wind from the WSW, of around 15mph with stronger gusts. Why does this matter – well the straight course at Goodwood runs WSW, so the runners will be facing a stiff headwind. Not ideal for front runners, favourable for those that sit in behind and challenge late. I’ll be watching the first two races to see how it plays out in practice.
Something new – not really. I wrote about the effect of the wind at Goodwood in my first column in Odds On magazine in October 1996. For those with nothing better to do on a Monday evening, the relevant column is on page 17 of this PDF:

July 31, 2023 at 22:20 #1657444Very low wind today, will try to get on here during my break tomorrow (on course) with an update on the weather and wind

August 1, 2023 at 09:49 #1657523The forecast for Wednesday looks atrocious: wind gusts of 40mph+, again from the WSW, and persistent driving rain

August 1, 2023 at 20:14 #1657723Many thanks for all the updates Ben, most helpful.
Looked no more than a stiff breeze today, but tomorrow might be different.
August 1, 2023 at 21:34 #1657741Bit blowy/blustery today but those in front didn’t seem to stop really and it did seem a bit variable in direction.
Could be an interesting angle with a stiff wind down the straight. The cyclists don’t streamline in wind for no reason I guess. - AuthorPosts
