I am going to Goodwood on Saturday for the first time.
Any thoughts on the card?
May 5, 2006 at 10:49 #71918The card at the moment leaves something to be desired I think. the Predominant has pretty much been dismissed as a Derby trial in recent years, and its movement to Guineas day has done it no favours. Having it next Saturday would be a far better idea, as although it would coincide with the Lingfield Derby trial, the Lingfield Derby trial is hardly as popular as the Guineas. It would also be good to have 2 Derby trials on the same day.
The Lupe sometimes can be good, and had Thakafaat and Something Exciting in it last year, who went on to win the Ribblesdale and came 2nd in the Oaks respectively.
One thing i can say though, is that you will absolutely love the course. It is stunning – rivalled only by Newbury and Cheltenham I think.
May 5, 2006 at 11:14 #71919A very attractive and scenic course.
Downsides are:-
- quite pricey
- traffic chaos
- not all consider it a fair track (it’s Fallon’s least favourite course)
Unfortunate that the Predominate and Lupe clash with the classic card at Newmarket. Some trainers declined to run their horses at Goodwood on Saturday because they couldn’t secure a suitable jock with the big boys at HQ.
May 5, 2006 at 11:18 #71920It’s always the worry with that. Traffic is pretty bad when you’re trying to park, and also getting out.
Interesting to hear that about Fallon – the way he goes on about Southwell, you’d think he’d kill to ride at goodwood.
Pricey – I have Junior Membership for £110 which gets me into the Richmond Enclosure all year for free, which is an excellent price. parking is free in some areas, but it does cost £27 a day for Glorious Goodwood I seem to remember (even though I blagged that i was 16 and got free entry :cheesy: )
May 5, 2006 at 12:14 #71922Southwell ain’t that bad – he should try going racing on the train, one every two hours to Rolleston or you can get a bus to Southwell village itself then walk for about 30mins to the track.
May 5, 2006 at 16:23 #71923Cheers guys, that all sounds very good…
And what about more specifically Saturday’s card ie. the horses running and which ones we might make money backing! ;)
May 5, 2006 at 17:02 #71924Nore,
In the 2.20 DEVERON may well be worth taking on at a skinny price (the RP forecast 13/8f). She has twice hung at Goodwood and not looked comfortable on the track. The distance is an unknown (was talked about by connections as a French Guineas possible earlier in the year) and didn’t show an awful lot on only start in Dubai this year. That said, she is officially rated 12lb superior to her nearest rival so may well win, but it’s not a betting proposition at that price.
Later in the 4.30 Godolphin run an unraced colt called Gulf of Gold. He was singled out by Simon Crisford as the one unraced horse of theirs to have shown some "sparkle" and holds an entry in the G1 St James Palace. Again price will dictate whether to have a bet or not but at least there are some fair animals in this race so may get a decent one.
May 5, 2006 at 20:04 #71925Mumaathel will give Gulf Of Gold something to think about, he ran well on his debut to finish a staying on 3rd beaten a length and a half behind Portland (second home that day Street Warrior beaten since), he’ll obviously know more this time and that little bit of racing experience may gain the day, he was gambled from 9/1 to 5/1 on his debut so it will be interesting to see if they come for him again.

May 5, 2006 at 22:52 #71926Quite why Fallon rides Epsom so well but always makes a pig’s ear of it at Goodwood has always left me baffled.
May 7, 2006 at 11:16 #71927Thanks for the replies. We had a pleasant day even though it drizzled rain on and off through the afternoon.
Its certainly picturesque and I can imagine its Glorious at the end of July. Its a surprisingly compact enclosure area and I’m guessing the Festival is all-ticket because there seems a definite limit to the number you could pack in there. The approach to it is badly signposted, even more so close to the racecourse, and after we had been refused entry to the Richmond Enclosure we had quite a trek around to where we were acceptable.
To be honest I’m surprised its still topping David Ashforth’s Racecourse Tour table in the Racing Post. Nowhere ‘better’ than that? Sandown? Cheltenham?
May 7, 2006 at 11:30 #71928I agree Nore.
Why were you rejected for the Richmond?
To my mind the course is overpriced ,overrated and gridlocked.
Yesterday’s card hardly excited. All the top jocks were at HQ and there were some small fields for the Goodwood features.
We were wearing jeans. Which is fair enough; they’re entitled to their rules. Though, only in England. ;)

Yes we English like to keep standards up and preserve the class system.
May 7, 2006 at 16:59 #71931We had a similar experience at Glorious Goodwood. Scorching hot day, jacket left in the car, shirt and tie not good enough. Although we already had tickets we couldn’t be bothered to walk back.
Similar at Epsom. Dressed ‘properly’ this time, we witnessed a group of drunks, dressed in top hat and tails, fall into a bed full of flowers. They rolled around laughing which ensured every flower was crushed.
I detest the dress code policy. As long as you are clean, and not drunk or drugged, you should have a decent view of the paddock and course at a reasonable price.

Quite. I agree 100%.
People like the Aussies don’t understand the need for our dress codes which to them perpetuate the class system in the UK
May 7, 2006 at 20:59 #71933Aussies and class – not 2 words I thought I’d see in a sentence, as I’m finding out to my cost at the moment
As a racing enthusiast (as all on here), it is frustrating to goto the races only to be surrounded by drunken yobs. They look less smart in their suits than other non-suited and booted folk.
Definitely sympathise about being refused entry ..
