Unfortunately I was working, taped C4’s coverage and then saw the headline on the BBC website on the way home. However it was still an incredibly powerful moment and poor Rishi was almost left speechless. Kudos to Newbury for broadcasting the news to race goers. I don’t know if any of the posters here were at Newbury and can tell us what the reaction was like.
I like the way that AP has gone about this. His "farewell tour" will allow the racing public to show their true appreciation of the man and May even boost attendances as punters around the country take the opportunity to catch him in action for possibly the last time. Hopefully he has a few visits to Scotland to come.
While the debates will rage about who is the best jockey ever, there is no doubt that there are few sportsmen let alone jockeys who were as tough, determined, brave and had the will to win that Tony has. A true legend of British sport.

I agree, a typical selfless act from AP that can only benefit racing rather than him quietly retiring in the summer.
What a jockey! What a sportsman! What a hero!

Scheduled rides at Kelso on Thursday for starters. Might influence a few who are swithering about attending.
February 8, 2015 at 12:46 #504637I thought it entirely appropriate that the greatest jockey of all time announced his retirement exclusively to one who holds a similar hallowed position in racing journalism.
Rishi "indoor bowls" Persad.

February 8, 2015 at 12:57 #504642To be honest, I find it next to impossible to pinpoint who the greatest jockey is because there are a lot of talented ones with different styles and how they make an impact on a personal level.
AP McCoy is an absolute warrior of a jockey … almost cyborg-like in terms of attitude and hardness with the predatory awareness of a shark. He’s won many races on horses where other jockeys would’ve, more than likely, thrown in the towel and accepted defeat. But not Tony … every particle of his boundless energy and strength to persevere is what made him the champion that he became.
I’ll miss him for sure!
