Galopin

The rest
December 29, 2023 at 21:19 #1675628I just think its dangerous to assume that because Fastorslow has beaten Galopin in two steadily run contests where Galopin probably wasn’t at his best that Fastorslow is only that good and won’t be better himself when the emphasis is more on stamina.
I couldn’t be entertaining anyone else in the race myself other than those two but the market tells you as much I suspect. Shishkin will have his fans but 10 next year, probably needs to be better than he ever was. Can’t see it myself.
December 29, 2023 at 21:33 #1675631“I’d have Shishkin shorter after Boxing Day”
I wouldn’t. There’s nothing like falling over whilst in contention to keep a horse’s reputation intact. It’s much better than winning a short head in a bunched finish. Sometimes justified (see Galopin/Turners) sometimes not. I this case- I think not.
December 29, 2023 at 21:55 #1675638In my view he was winning the KG if staying up and putting in an impressive performance. Have a look at the overall GC market + outside the front 2, it’s winnndy.
Gerri after the last day? Serious Questions for me and i’d have Shishkin a little shorter, only marginally. Wouldn’t back him. Maybe it’s more i’d have Gerri 16/1 or more now after that poor run.

Hindsight is 20/20 so make the most of it!December 29, 2023 at 22:38 #1675643I wouldn’t back either but if I had to, I’d pick the 8yo with the form figures 1,2 in grade 1 races this season (albeit the first of those is a soft G1 that ought to be demoted to G2) over the 10yo with RR and UR beside his name.
“He’s telling us he’s a 3 miler” sounds better than “He’s telling us he’s a busted flush” but the horse has old legs, and old back and has had two wind surgeries- the second of which will have worn off by now but as he hasn’t had to finish out a race yet this season, it hasn’t been tested.Jack, if Shishkin beats Gerri in the Gold Cup, I will find you at Down Royal in November and buy you a pint, and I’ll put a cocktail umbrella and a cherry on top of it for you.

Had a few losers on at mental prices, but not surprisingly, none of them got an entry.
Won’t touch anything now until NRNB kicks in, but most interested in these
Corach Rambler
Mentioned him several times last season for this seasons Gold Cup, and the 100’s was there for the taking. I didn’t take it. Sigh. Still on the radar though, and I’ll definitely bet him. I’d love 25’s with NRNB attached, but that might be extremely optimisticJungle Boogie
Not reading too much into that race yesterday, but he’s in full working order at least. Extremely fragile horse, but very talented too, and it’s been a long wait for me (and Gladiateur) to see him back. Very strictly one for NRNBL’Homme Presse
Was my main hope for last season’s Gold Cup, but he obviously met with a setback. Very nice horse though, and he’s now on the comeback trail, due out at the big Lingfield Meeting. Was tempted to back him just now, but no rush, and if I do bet him, will be at lower odds than he is right nowHewick and Nassalam
Both of these would be very ground dependent. Hewick a real favourite now, while that run from Nassalam was excellent. I’d consider them later.January 2, 2024 at 14:12 #1676109lOl GAG, stupidly didn’t reply to this. I’ll be honest i wouldn’t rule it out. He was running a cracker in the KG. UR yes but he was in the process of running to a better level than Gerri was IMO.
@HDLG
“He will go straight to Cheltenham. It worked brilliantly last year and it’s strange to think the Gold Cup will be sort of a warm-up to the Grand National.“He was great in the Betfair Chase and was close at the finish; he’s in great form and seems better than ever.”

Hindsight is 20/20 so make the most of it!January 2, 2024 at 16:37 #1676115Gerri Colombe owner Brian Acheson reflecting on his horse’s defeat…
“Galopin is the best horse since Kauto Star and I’ve said it since the day of the Turners (Novices’ Chase, at Cheltenham). He is an absolute rocket, a weapon.
We lost nothing in defeat and I don’t think there is a horse in training that can stay with him, he’s just a machine.
You are running for second place. In the era where we don’t have enough good horses, if I didn’t have Gerri in the race, then you would love him to win by half the track just to make him look a superstar – and he is a superstar, I would love to own him.
Hats off to him and it was actually an honour to run against him, he’s so good.
We will take him on but there is only one winner.”January 2, 2024 at 17:17 #1676116The real whacker from a betting perspective.
I fancy he cud leave those 2 runs behind and run a big race .66s or 33s NRNB
I fancy the field will thin out a bit this year . Think the owners will go for it and he ran some very nice races last season at Cheltenham.
January 2, 2024 at 21:41 #1676126VTC I backed L’Homme Presse earlier today. I hope he shows his old form when he returns from lay off

January 4, 2024 at 11:21 #1676207There’s an interesting argument around the claims of Corach Rambler based largely around what Fastorslow has done since and probably Corach’s record at Cheltenham. Now the subsequent handicap marks seem to imply that Corach was very well in at the time of the Ultima and the Grand National and that Fastorslow was a fast improving horse who has gone past him subsequently, Corach is rated 159 over here and Fastorslow rated 168 in Ireland, he’ll possibly be higher here. Corach ran at Cheltenham in the Ultima off a mark of 146, Fastorslow off 150, both clearly very well handicapped, Corach got to go to Aintree off that same 146 mark. At the time he was assessed as being 10lb well in for Aintree, the Ultima has since been upgraded to imply he was 12lbs well in for Aintree. I’ve seen some using the argument of how impressive he was at Aintree as a case for him being a Gold Cup contender but I think its fair to say any horse 12lbs well in would be entitled to look pretty impressive in any handicap. Corach got nudged up just 1lb higher for Aintree to what he did at Cheltenham so the handicappers view is he didn’t need to be much better than he’d already shown. He does tend to come good in the spring and comes alive at Cheltenham but will he improve again this season at the age of 10 in the spring or is Aintree as good as he is? I’m leaning towards the latter to be honest and even the former option means he needs to improve probably around half a stone just to place in a Gold Cup.
January 27, 2024 at 21:56 #1678919Right now The Real Whacker is eyeballing Lord Windermere just like that Spiderman meme. That run today looked full of promise.
Obviously it would need a below par effort again from GDC but he’s definitely worth an each-way poke.
January 28, 2024 at 06:22 #1678955I’m still think Corach is a cracking e.w bet Jack , I’ll keep saying it GDC is a talented horse but he is beatable , Fastorslow is an up and coming horse who has a gear he hasn’t , he’s the obv one , Shiskin …well is Shiskin and L Homme Presse will also be on the premises , this is no walkover
January 28, 2024 at 06:45 #1678956“I’ll keep saying it GDC is a talented horse but he is beatable”
Not if he runs like he did last time. A horse would need to run in the 180s to beat him and i don’t see that happening.
January 28, 2024 at 06:52 #1678957And if he runs to the 2 prev runs Mike ? … As I said beatable as he’s been beat
January 28, 2024 at 10:37 #1678971Anything over 3m ran at a testing gallop, id say hes unbeatable, hes a 180 horse under those conditions now, id fancy him to win this by a distance and be beaten by FOS at punche again
January 28, 2024 at 13:32 #1678984Now they’ve realised they had his tactics completely wrong I’d be surprised if Fastorslow ever beat him again
He’s a different beast altogether when ridden aggressively
And he bolted up in last seasons renewal regardless
