Apart from the winner and Order Of St George the rest of the Gold Cup field weren’t up to much. Can’t see why another one of my bets there was Sweet Selection, his win this season in the Sagaro doesn’t look up to much; 2nd there Prince Of Arran not good enough. Pallasator well below form in 5th, but it’s understandable for such a big horse on reappearance. He ran well in this race last year, only 1 1/4 lengths behind Big Orange. Also 3 lengths 4th behind him in 2015. So runs well here and @ 20/1 a fair each way shout. Can’t see why Gold Cup 3rd She Is No Lady is available @ bigger than Sweet Selection and Prince Of Aran; she is improving and will save if getting any bigger. Sheikhzayadroad ran well here last year, but did at Ascot too and dissapointed there this time around, carrying head awkwardly. Although finished in front of Big Orange in Meydan, the big horse was short of a run.
I backed Oriental Fox in the “Conditions” race (not even listed) Queen Alex at Royal Ascot, but in truth the form isn’t worth much and OF is a 9 year old – won’t improve. US Army Ranger was running on in 3rd, but that is way below his Derby 2nd and has always looked temperamental. Difficult to win with and one to take on although am sure will shorten due to the Coolmore Massive. If there is a Queen Alex horse that may do better it’s imo Qewy. Had better form in Australia and Appleby in very good form. 22/1 not quite good enough.
Wicklow Brave would stand a great chance on the form of his Irish St Leger win over Order Of St George. However, made all and Frankie caught Moore napping – flattered. WB’s other form (including 3 1/2 lengths 4th in this race last year) isn’t really good enough.
High Jinx has good form if going back far enough. Now 9 and on the downgrade, although might play an important part here (along with Qewy) if hastling Big Orange up front.
Although the three year olds have improvement to make, that’s just it – they are improving and get 13 lbs weight for age which is imo advantageous. Stradivarius won the Queen’s Vase with a bit more than distances suggest; playing his cards late. If he’s up to winning the St Leger has to go close here – saver. I’ve been a fan of Desert Skyline for some time. Finished around 3 3/4 lengths behind Stradivarius, but improved in the Bahrain Trophy. Length 2nd to Raheen House over a minimum trip for him of 1m5f; giving the impression the further he goes the better. Cheek pieces could bring about more progress and 40/1 was super value. Now only 25/1 so can’t advise people to take that price.
High Power has also contracted from 25/1 to 18/1 but still looks outstanding value to me. Handicap form when it’s put up under big weights are often underer-stimated in Group races. High Power won the Northumberland Plate with 9 stone 9 lbs. Clever Cookie disappointed in that race but he carried only 1 lb more. What price would a Clever Cookie be in this race at the heart of his progress? Before that, High Power finished 5 lengths behind Big Orange in the Henry II. I don’t expect him to beat Big Orange if the Bell horse runs to his very best, but High Power is available @ a lot bigger odds and may well be able to improve further.
Big Orange himself had everything go perfectly for him in the Gold Cup. Set the pace and even when Quest For More came past he wasn’t pressed when going up again to lead. Others allowed him his own way. With High Jinx and Qewy – Sheikhzayad Road might also race prominently – the race might not favour Big Orange so much. Rivals will probably also challenge wide of the favourite, so as not to encourage his battling qualities.
I backed Big Orange in the Gold Cup and has by far the best chance here, but imo not odds-on. Had a small lay bet @ 1.14/1 ante-post and then the second and third favourites both came out!Value Is EverythingLennox: Stakes 96, Return 98

Value Is EverythingBit unlucky in the Lennox, Home Of The Brave 8/1 2nd, Suedois 39/1 3rd and Limato 3/1 4th, all beaten by a 50/1 coming from last to first in a probably overly strongly run race. Although suspect most people can say they were unlucky in that race.
Least I did make a profit in the Gold Cup. Stradivarius 10/1 saver with my 40/1 each way shot Desert Skyline 3rd.
Saver Expert Eye won the Vintage, main bet Mildenberger would’ve been 2nd but for a little slowly away and couldn’t get a prominent position.
I’ve backed Expert Eye for the 2000 Guineas @ 7/1.
