57 points @ 7/2 (B365) Deauville* (min 3/1)Don’t forget this one! Market is wrong here (imo). Far less between Foundation and Deauville at Newmarket than the 11/10 and 7/2 would have you believe. Especially with a likely stronger pace likely to be in latter’s favour.
Tony Curtis impressed me at Salisbury (good conformation) but Hannon’s form puts me off. Mengli Khan has potential and from an in-form yard, but missed the big prices. If I had another bet it would have to be the Coolmore second string Johannes Vermeer as a saver. Will look again tomorrow.

Bit more than a saver:

Unusual, but tbh Mtoto I don’t take much notice of single big bets. As doesn’t mean it’s wise money, particularly when Highclere are involved. Their horses are often well backed overnight and early morning by wealthy owners after getting the heads up (£10k probably means little to them)… then it drifts late.

27 points @ 3/1 (B365) Zonderland* (min 15/8)Value Is EverythingOctober 24, 2015 at 11:40 #1218787I think this looks a pretty difficult race. Personally, I thought Zonderland finished pretty tamely last time and the softer ground should put an even greater emphasis on stamina. If he does go on to fulfill that initial promise think it might be over 6f.
The Gosden horse travelled pretty well first time but eventually only won on the nod. Ground might also be an issue for him and at around 4/1 he looks plenty short enough.

I didn’t see much wrong with Zonderland’s Newmarket effort Stilvi – didn’t get the best of runs from the back. But it’s true travelled well yesterday and you’d think he’d be at least as good at 6f. Might also do better on firmer ground, although both sire Dutch Art and dam’s sire Pivotal’s progenys have a good record on soft. However, Zonderland’s half sister Osipova (by Makfi)’s only win came on the all-weather and twice disappointed on soft. Grand-dam is guineas winner Russian Rhythem seemed well suited to a firm surface and never raced on soft.
Think I was a bit lucky with The Crazy Horse. Start Time seemed to give it away, wandering both ways under pressure and Buick needing to put whip down in closing stages. That said, part of the reason why I went for Cox and Gosden horses was Start Time’s temperament.
Value Is EverythingOctober 25, 2015 at 12:06 #1218943Ah, but if you went before the last Mark, you missed the highlight of the day………..Victoria Pendleton falling off inside the last furlong with apparently no help from the tack
October 25, 2015 at 12:18 #1218947Better day for me with three wins – two main bets and a saver – from four races yesterday. If it wasn’t for the rank outsider winning the Racing Post could’ve been clean sweep (Johannes second).
Must say I think some of the criticism of Dettori is wide of the mark.
Foundation drawn near the rail and a known hold up horse. If looking at the Royal Lodge, evident he was free early at Newmarket. All those factors make it obvious Frankie was going to drop it out near the rail. It was thought by many – me included – Coolmore were going to make it a strong pace. But with three runners – pacemaker seemed to put innitial pace in to the race before slowing it down; making Frankie’s job harder, needing himself to slow a slightly free runner down. By this time Foundation was surounded, with nowhere to go, Frankie made the percentage call in following the clear (in betting terms) second fav, thought to be by far his main danger. Then, two out you can see Frankie look sideways, where the winner was in the way of going around the field. Decision needed to be made there and then whether to follow the rank outsider through or hope for a gap. Usually waiting for a gap is the right thing to do. As it turned out (in hindsight) in this case the wrong decision. It wasn’t Frankie’s best race, but considering the horse’s temperament, draw, positions/temperaments/chances of rivals) it wasn’t that bad, more victim of circumstance than anything.
Coolmore had a plan to get the favourite beaten, it worked. Trouble is their two main hopes are best with a test of stamina, so not only did they get the favourite beat – they got themselves beaten too.
