I was impressed with Friendly Soul, but she was able dictate a race on good ground. I got the impression that she was more speed than stamina. Not sure the combination of softening ground and distance would be in her favour.
That said none of the opposition look as if they are crying out for softening ground. Sinology is by a good ground sire out of a mare who enjoyed some cut, but the form of that Newbury maiden looks terrible.
May 13, 2024 at 23:42 #1694271Fair point it is a bit early Stilvi, but I’m not going to have much time over the next day or so. In fact I’ll be pretty busy for the next week or more. So it was either put the bets up now or probably not at all.
But I wouldn’t be worried about the ground with Friendly Soul unless it became very soft. Most of sire Kingman’s runs were on a sound surface – as befits one with such a turn of foot. But if I remember rightly his impressive victory in the Irish Guineas was on pretty soft ground. FS’s dam In Clover ran 18 times, never on anything firmer than GOOD and her best two victories were on soft and very soft. Of her progeny, In Crowd won on Good and soft ground and disappointed the only time raced on good-firm. Call The Wind successful in a Group 2 on Soft and runner-up in the Group 1 Prix Royal Oak on Heavy. To me – Friendly Soul’s action is one that imo should be effective on at least good-soft if not soft. On times, the ground at Newmarket was as the official, on the good-firm side of GOOD without being good-firm.
…And although she made the running I don’t think she “dictate”d as such. The time was a fast one (considering both age and race distances) compared to others on the day. So should not have favoured the front runner. Therefore I’d rather it were a true test of stamina at 10f anyway. Judged on both the Pretty Polly and her debut (admittedly over shorter) she is amenable to restraint too. Settles well when either leading or under restraint tracking pace. So – at this stage – I’d expect her to even stay 12f if supplemented for the Oaks, even though technically not bred for it.
I am a big fan of Friendly Soul and the horse she beat in the Pretty Polly, Kalpana. If either is a late entry in the Oaks then Get On!
Value Is EverythingMay 14, 2024 at 08:56 #1694278If the Musidora goes well – she might just be in a different league to a weak field – I would see Friendly Soul as much more likely to go Prix De Diane. Personally, I think she could drop back and win over a mile, but something would probably have to go wrong to go down that route. She definitely had too many gears for Kalpana.

Value Is EverythingMay 15, 2024 at 22:51 #1694424The value tomorrow depends on how much rain they get before the races and the amount isn’t easy to predict. So probably won’t be betting until late – if at all.
