Punchestown Gold Cup
48 points @ 4/1 (B365) Boston Bob* (min 4/1)Yyyyyyyyyessssss!
At bloody last!
About time Boston Bob won some ante-post money for me.
At bloody last his trainer has run the horse at its best distance. He’s finally repaying the faith many of us have showed in him for the past couple of years. Jumped a lot better today which was encouraging. I don’t think he’ll ever take the breath away with a leap but he didn’t lose ground at his fences today like he did last time out at Aintree.
And well done with the win, of course
May 1, 2014 at 00:03 #477447After backing Boston Bob for this year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup THM, I suppose he’s going to win it next year by beating Holywell in to second.

Believe me THM, it is not wishfull thinking. On Holywell myself. But these things have a habbit of happening.I once had just two ante-post bets for the colts classics. Backed Celtic Swing for the 2000 Guineas and Pennekamp for the Derby. Only for the latter to beat the former in the 2000, before himself going wrong (at a short price) at Epsom.

I thought sentiment had a lot to do with the two horses being so close in the market Pants.
I’ve never agreed with the theory of Hurricane being worse at Cheltenham. True, the second to Rock On Ruby wasn’t his best run, but not that far off. Two Cheltenham victories were spot on. So if he’s not been far off (if anything at all) his best at Cheltenham, then you’ve got to conclude Hurricane’s fourth spot in March was a case of age catching up with The Fly. Had 5 lengths to make up on Jezki, so if luck in running wasn’t going to come in to things Jezki must have had a much better chance. It did go through my mind that Jessie’s darling was not suited by a slowly run race earlier in the year (as this was also likely to be). However, the hood/ear plugs made a big difference at Cheltenham (settling much better) so it wasn’t so much of a concern.
I could understand the two being as close as they were if Mr Mullins was in so much better form than Mrs Harrington; but that was not the case. Another reason for Jezki improving at Cheltenham was his trainer’s much better form (in very poor form earlier on in the year when running against The Fly)… And she’s in even better nick now!
I rated Jezki as around a fair 8/11 shot, with Hurricane Fly 6/4 and Steps To Freedom 50/1.
At Evens against 8/11 I should really have put 106 points on, but 100 is enough stake, particularly when it is on just the one horse.
Hurricane Fly has been a great Champion. Hope they retire him now.
Nice to see you around again Pants.

Couldn’t stay away.
tbh Haven’t had a good spell since I left DLAP, only slightly in profit which meant had to dip in to my savings to live. Thought I didnt need this ego trip, but may be I do… just to concentrate the mind.A new beginning on the old thread.
First bet of the new season:

* (min 5/2)
Don’t usually bet this "short" ante-post for Cheltenham in October. But this is one that could easily start odds-on. More Of That is already an above average winner of the race, still improving, acts on soft but equally effective on good, proven at Cheltenham and comes from the best yard in the country for preparing Festival horses. Doubt his main rival (
Annie Power
) will run in this. Two novices
Briar Hill
and
Beat That
have potential, but both need to make great strides to beat a top form More Of That.
Solwhit
looks too old and
Whisper
may well go chasing. Biggest danger could be if owner companion
At Fishers Cross
could get his jumping together early in the season and fulfil all his potential… Then there could be a C O P on the McManus front for Jonjo’s star to go chasing. But that’s a fairly big if at this stage.
Value Is EverythingOctober 29, 2014 at 21:02 #493749Welcome back GT, best of luck with your bets this season.
I’d agree, More Of That looks pretty solid.
Not a race I normally bet that much on, or this early, but taken a chance on a couple of outsiders at decent odds.
Jetson
, who I could see surprising a few in this, and
Seeyouatmidnight
, who looks as if he’s going chasing anyway……….but worth a few quid should that route not work out for him.
October 29, 2014 at 21:12 #493752Welcome ‘home’
I have been backing this lad since last April and feel very strongly he is (bar the dreaded injury) a banker!Any others that you have on your radar?
I like Saphir du Rheu who looks a stayer who could go right to the top.
2nd up is Southfield Theatre who the whole yard rate very highly indeed.
3rd are Don Poli and Very Wood in the novice chasing ranks.
I have a sneaky feeling that Glens Melody could go off favourite for the Mares race as I think Ricci may go for gold!! I’ve been backing her in EW doubles and trebles.October 29, 2014 at 21:49 #493758Welcome back GT, best of luck with your bets this season.

Thanks VTC,
Neither of those two appeal tbh. Jetson looked flattered at Punchestown, getting by far the best ride. Seeyouatmidnight is a good pick, horse I like for novice chasing. But connections missed Cheltenham last season and can see them doing the same this.Nice to see a few more trying their luck here and some old boys returning too!
