Not often i go against you EC but i’ll hold my hands up & say SORRY I WAS WRONG as someone has stated it wasnt a vintage field but he can only beat what he has to race against
it was indeed an impressive performance
all the best
Larry
now EC tell me whats gonna win the KENTUCKY DERBY
i have BOB & JOHN & SWEETNORTHERN SAINT
May 6, 2006 at 15:19 #71958Impressive display and it was all over 2f out.
I’m not understanding the arguments about whether it was a vintage Guineas or not. IMO I think hindsight is needed to determine as to whether the race was vintage or not…and time will tell how good this field is. From first impressions it was a decent renewal as the first two places were deservedly filled.
I can’t see GW being a Derby horse as he has so much speed, and Sir Percy would look the better contender at this stage.
On a seperate note the race wasn’t particularly aesthetically pleasing to see them all strung across the track which seems to be standard for a Guineas these days. I much preferred it when they came up the stands side and had a rail to run against.
I will be amazed if any of those behind today wins a Group One (unless it’s against one another in, for example, the St James’s Palace) over a mile this season or even reaches a place against the older horses later in the year.

May 6, 2006 at 15:38 #71962Very impressive performance by George Washington. He’s got tons of ability and I’m really looking forward to watching him (hopefully barring injury) throughout the season.
I must admit, I’d be surprised if he managed to stay unbeaten this season, not through lack of ability but because he likes to come from off the pace. I could easily see him getting alot of traffic problems in the big mile races like the sussex stakes or the QEII for example.

Quote: from EC on 4:34 pm on May 6, 2006[br]..and why is todays race substandard? ..what are you baseing the statements on?

2nd Sir Percy: wants further.
3rd Olympian Odyssey: 33-1, maiden winner.
4th Araafa: 66-1, maiden winner.
5th Misu Bond: won a handicap off 100 last time.
6th Final Verse: maiden winner.
7th Amadeus Wolf: non-stayer.
8th Horatio Nelson: stable second-string, unfancied, wants further.
9th Asset: won a weak AW Listed race last time.
10th Close To You: scraped home in a Listed on the AW last time.
11th Killybegs: ran below his Craven form, which wasn’t good enough anyway.
12th Red Clubs: non-stayer.
13th Frost Giant: stable’s outsider of three.
14th Opera Cape: represented a stable out of form and had 7lbs to find even on his best juvenile form.
Is that enough?
May 6, 2006 at 15:46 #7196414th Opera Cape: represented a stable out of form
Hmmm isn’t Ballydoyle the stable out of form!?!?

Quote: from EC on 4:52 pm on May 6, 2006[br]you seem to have made a lot of decisions about those horses very quickly Yqeum..strange because on this board before the rece most people were and probably still haven’t decided what does and doesn’t want further.
I assume that you watched the race? Anyone with any experience of race-reading would almost certainly come to the same conclusions about the two non-stayers mentioned and the two fancied runners who shaped as though a mile wasn’t far enough.
As for the future, I don’t know how much improvement the winner may find. He could progress throughout the season or this could have been his big day- only time will tell. But, once again, I’ll re-iterate my original point: all that he’s done today is confirmed juvenile form and it is impossible to go overboard about him for doing that.
May 6, 2006 at 17:12 #71966Impressive.
However temperament is obviosuly going to be an issue for him and his trainer will do very well to ensure he keeps his at his optimum.
AQ clash with Proclamation should be one to savour but I’ll still side with the older horse at this stage.
May 6, 2006 at 17:17 #71967I have to say that GW was visually very impressive today. The way he quickened from about 3 out was fabulous to see. Lucky he waited until after the race for the antics!
May 6, 2006 at 17:27 #71968What did he do after the race? I was watching the race on a screen a Haydock and was referring to his reluctance at the stall and the fact he hung half way across Newmarket Heath.
May 6, 2006 at 17:28 #71969He refused to walk into the winners enclosure and started backing up along the path. In the end, they had to bring him in the country route through the pre-parade ring. It was about ten minutes before Fallon got off to weigh in.
May 6, 2006 at 17:29 #71970Wow!! What the hell was that?
Brilliant performance. I’ve read all this topic and I can’t believe some people are claiming this was an ordinary Guineas. There were four (I think) Group 1 winners in the race and the three top two year olds with only two defeats between them. The second was a previosly unbeaten Group 1 winner. What more can you ask for? What subsequently happens remains to be seen but at this stage you’ve got to say Sir Percy would’ve won nine out of ten Guineas.
George Washington was absolutely brilliant, can’t really say much more than that.
May 6, 2006 at 17:40 #71971I was very impressed with GW today, I don’t think you could fail to be to be honest.
However, I’d like to see him race against older horses before people start to laud him as a great.
Remember a couple of seasons ago we had a superstar filly in Attraction who drubbed all the 3yo fillies out of sight in 3 G1 mile races, then the first time she took on an older mare, she herself was exposed as being less than ‘the second coming’.
Time will tell if GW is ‘great’, but he has to do a lot more ie win all-aged group 1 races, before he can be said to be great in my book.
May 6, 2006 at 18:11 #71973I am glad to say I am on record here as saying he is the best I have seen since El Gran Senor , his speed figure on his last run was the best I have ever got for a 2 yr old
what a horse
