Thought he ran a fine race for a long long way. Looked like he didnt get home. Certainly ran better than I thought he would.
November 4, 2006 at 22:49 #30105Nothing gained, nothing ventured, and in this case nothing lost.
Bernardini getting done was probably the biggest result of the night for Coolmore…
November 4, 2006 at 22:50 #30106David Junior was a big dissapointment.
November 4, 2006 at 22:50 #30107Second that. Thought he was most probably fine on the dirt but didn’t quite get home. The bump he recieved from Invasor probably didn’t help either.
November 4, 2006 at 22:51 #30108Yes GW wasn’t good enough under today’s conditions. I doubt getting sandwiched helped much either.
A shame imo that he is not staying in training. Looks to have mentally matured and would have made a cracking 4yo. Still, guess its all about the money.

November 4, 2006 at 22:52 #30109Ditto that last remark for Bernardini.
November 4, 2006 at 22:56 #30110Agree, Just a shame he got sandwiched on the bend as he would have been closer. Behaved himself so well especially during that encounter with the stall handlers.
His progeny should be interesting!

GW seemed to travel well, but just didn’t last home imo.
Even AOB doesn’t get it right all the time.
Sad to see Soumillon’s rodeo act on Hurricane Run, the horse was obviously hating the ground, but didn’t deserve being beaten up by his jockey. Can’t help feeling that KF would have shown a lot more sympathy!:(
November 4, 2006 at 23:20 #30112Didnt stay of course..was it so difficult to predict that? I dunno…they are the breeders
Rare that there is such a charismatic flat horse and its an empty feeling that he wont be running again
Rather like retiring flintoff after the ashes :(

Clive,
I’m sure it was, as his half brother Grandera did get 10f. Also he never looked like he was running out of stamina at the end of his wins over a mile….

November 6, 2006 at 12:47 #30114Agree, but this wasnt the race to find out perhaps
Next years Eclipse could have been ideal.
I know we all would have liked to have seen more of him but the breeders mile followed by a carefully targeted campaign moving up to 10f next year would have been far more interesting.
In some ways they might have blown his chance of proving that he can stay that little bit extra (and I suspect in the right circumstances, he would)
November 6, 2006 at 13:00 #30115Clive,
Is next years Eclipse going to be on dirt? Not sure it is to be honest. Only reason he ran in the classic is because it has the biggest reward in breeding terms and considering there was never a chance he would run as a four year old, this was his final opportunity.

November 6, 2006 at 13:18 #30116I know that, but if the distance was the issue
Anyway, lots of tracks will be converting to Poly soon wont they? Is it really such a big thing to have the dirt win?
Maybe he should have run at kempton….
But why was there no chance of him running at 4? Some would say he still has a few things to prove. Arguably (with araafa’s poor showing) he hasnt really beaten a top miler (not saying that there will be one around next year either)
Also, having worked so hard to get his temperament settled, its a pity the rewards couldnt be reaped
November 6, 2006 at 13:30 #30117I’m not so sure that GW would have won the mile. In a race where we had such an incredibly good hand, we couldn’t even get a show? I think GW would have finished second to the winner personally. The mile was one of those occasional weird races where none of the fancies show their form.
November 6, 2006 at 13:33 #30118Dirt seems to be still driving the market as not all tracks have been converted as yet. His owners seem to think he has done enough and there will be plenty of breeders looking for his services at stud, based purely on the speed he has shown in his races…
November 6, 2006 at 14:06 #30119Remarkable how many of the same people wanting him to be kept on at 4 were the same people stating he would be retired after the Irish Guineas and not see a track again after his Celebration run. They were probably the same people who doubted him at 2 and again before the Guineas at 3.
A win on dirt would have opened up the American market for him. Even a place in the classic probably would have led him to stand at Ashford rather than Fethard.
November 6, 2006 at 14:57 #30120Quite obvious how good he was….. speed to burn.
