George clearly didn’t run to form. We’ll probably never know if my theory is right but I’m claiming this one!
June 21, 2007 at 17:13 #64717Please remember that
1GW did not have a proper spring training program.
2Had to get adjusted to race training again.
3Was having his first race of his new career.
4All of Aidan’s horses improve from their first run.
5So lookout next time.
June 21, 2007 at 19:10 #64718Next time is a different matter altogether. My figures told me not to back him this time ;)
June 22, 2007 at 08:35 #64719Ramonti didn’t win as easily as I thought he would, but I thought that was probably George’s best performance at least since he won what now looks a poor Guineas. He was a superb two year old, and he was very impressive at Newmarket, but he doesn’t seem to me to have delivered anything since then to justify his reputation.

The QEll was not a good race. Both Araafa and Court Masterpiece were already in decline. The rating he got for beating them, even in the style he did, was ridiculous.
He pulled going to the start in the Queen Anne but not as hard in the race as you say. Ramonti might have won by further if the pace had ben faster.
I haven’t got it in for George, and maybe he will deliver one day. He certainly looked as though he might be able to improve on what he did this week.
But maybe the Irish Guineas injury diminished his enthusiasm as well as diminishing him physically.
How many chances are people willing to give him before they judge him on what he’s actually done?
June 22, 2007 at 08:51 #64720On what evidence was Araafa already in decline?
June 22, 2007 at 08:56 #64721At Goodwood he finished more than three lengths behind Court Masterpiece who was never really a G1 horse by international standards. In the Breeders’ Cup Mile he was well down the field.
Perhaps I’m being generous to him in saying he was in decline. Perhaps that’s just how good he was.
June 22, 2007 at 09:08 #64722He was the victim of running too prominently against an over-fast pace in the Sussex. I agree about your appraisal of Court Masterpiece, hence he was somewhat flattered by how that race fell into his lap.
In the BC Mile, he was 5-wide coming around the home-turn. A mile was probably the limit of his stamina – his sire was best over 7f and he was out of a half-sister to Pivotal – so it’s no suprise that after being asked to go the long way around in another fast-run race he faded badly in the straight.
June 22, 2007 at 09:19 #64723I don’t think it was ‘far superior’ TDK. I think it was about the same.
I do think Ramonti’s third in Hong Kong was superior to his Queen Anne performance, and maybe his Italian form was very good too. Now Frankie’s learning his strengths, I think he may leave the Ascot form behind this year.
June 22, 2007 at 14:45 #64724
it couldnt be worse i agree ramontis victory on tuesday owes more to ryan moores inepteness than any other factor
gw will reverse this form with some style
June 22, 2007 at 18:23 #64725I do not think many people ( Clivex perhaps excepted) disagree that GW will improve for this run.
The point of this thread was, however, whether GW would win after a rushed preparation first time out and hence was a licence to print money. The majority wrongly insisted that he would due to his and O’Briens brilliance. The race underlined that there are some " rules" which are imutable but I don’t blame Zorro for having some fun at the expense of those licking their wounds.
.
June 22, 2007 at 18:46 #64726Hold on. he should of course improve but i wonder by how much…thats all
and i believe mental improvement is more important than physical.
June 23, 2007 at 00:53 #64727No fun Galejade. I said beforehand I thought Ramonti would win, and I honestly believe George is just another good horse given ridiculous amounts of free publicity. Maybe it’s his name people like so much.
Won’t mind if he proves me wrong though.
June 23, 2007 at 07:26 #64728Like you Zorro, I said I thought Ramonti would win beforehand and also like you, I think George Washington is a bit overrated – quality horse though he is. To be a top-class animal I think you really should be mentally in tune (which George sometimes doesn’t appear to be) as well as physically fit (which he most definitely was to my eye). If GW and Ramonti meet in the Sussex I know which one i’ll be backing.
