I sympathise with the every man for himself argument but I’d like to think I’d pay it back.

Would those who say they’d pay it back still do so if it was the Tote? I might have when it was in public ownership. Not so sure now.

I’d have paid it back. It’s possible I’d first have taken it and walked away. But it’s not my money so am sure I’d have given it back – either on the day or at another meeting.

When taking a first timer racing. He won a bet, went to get paid out and came back short changed. It just so happened a fella who so obviously didn’t have a clue, wasn’t paid his stake back. I made bloody sure he was paid!

That said, in my 30+ years of going racing that was the only time I had a complaint. Generally found on course bookmakers very honourable. Just because there might be one / the odd unscrupulous bookie, doesn’t mean we should treat them all badly. They are in business just like any other business.

    Depends who it was
I’d give Geoff the money back
if it was William Hill I’d take the money after they welched on a bet with me a few years back

Should have given it back , big risk that it upsets the punting karma getting money like that . Cannot have been hard up plonking 100 on , bad form imho . Tough enough as on course bookie now days . 375 not a bad win anyway .

‘if it was William Hill I’d take the money after they welched on a bet with me a few years back’

I do wonder what the response would be if it was one of the big boys. No difference in my eyes. It’s either illegal or it isn’t, it’s either morally wrong to take the money or it isn’t.

A different angle on this story, from me.
When See More Business won the Gold Cup, i was there with pals. I’d bet SMB to win with one of the course bookies. When he won the race i rushed to the bookie’s pitch and lo and behold i’d lost my betting slip.
The bookie told me to wait 30 mins or so, come back to him and by then his tally of payouts would likely indicate if i was telling the truth.
I went back to him and sure enough he could see he was £100 in excess on the race and duly paid me :good:
Cant remember which on course bookie it was, but fair play to him :good:

When I used to go to Wimbledon greyhounds, the bookmakers did not give me a ticket after a while. There was never any problem.

In this case, the punter should not have kept the money but if I was in Banks’s position I would be more annoyed with my clerk for making such a poor error.

As far as the public is concerned:
On course bookmakers have been tarred with the same brush as off course bookmakers.
    Which is unfair.

It is possible this was a mistake by the punter.
However, I hear the punter claimed the bigger sum which he (allegedly) knew the bookmaker had also taken a bet for…
Which sounds more like a deliberate attempt to mislead. Intentional theft.

I thought about this for a few days before posting.
Knowing me, at the point of trying to pay me to much, I would have told them. Too honest is me.
But as Ginge says above, sounds like a con.

Yes I think like Nathan it would depend on who it was and whether they’d done me a disservice in the past. Only difference is I would have taken the 20 odd quid plus a bit of “compensation”. I would have given it back to Geoff he had done me no wrong previously.

I remember when the bookies were particularly having a bad day at Listowel. One poor chap was arguing he had been short changed by €50. I’d just had a bet with this bookie and he tried it on with me when another favourite went in. When he gave me my winnings, I left the cash in full view and told him he’d only given me €175 not €225. He duly paid the extra.

On the same day, one on-course bookie who was giving the fav a half point better odds than all other bookies, left the course owing thousands to punters. Never did find out if the punters got their winnings.

So I think Geoff may have to take it on the chin. You get rogue punters just like you get rogue bookies.

As it looked intentional no way they are paying it back. Much as I dislike many bookies it’s sad when folk behave like that I’d like to think a majority of folk are decent.
