Any experts on here that could offer a view on how long a racehorse would need to recover from a gelding operation.
After Brave Tiger won at Kempton yesterday, his trainer reported that the horse had improved since being gelded prior to his previous race. That means that Brave Tiger was gelded between runs on August 8th and August 30th.
Twenty one days seems a remarkably short time for recovery, even allowing for the improvements in technique in recent years.

September 9, 2010 at 12:04 #316674My horse was gelded last week, and the vet told me that it would be 6 weeks before it would have fully recovered, so 21 days does seem strange.
September 9, 2010 at 12:06 #316677The exact length of time seemed to be 20 days 23 hours and 53 minutes in this case.
The horse’s chances quickly doubled as a result of the recovery.
September 9, 2010 at 12:13 #316678I asked this question a while ago with the response that it might only take a week or so for a horse to need off after gelding, but that it would generally take 2-3 weeks. I’ve known a number of horses to be gelded within 24 hours of running which would potentially mean that Brave Tiger had several weeks to recover before his latest start. Of course, there isn’t really that much evidence to suggest gelding can improve performance anyway, certainly not in a routine way, but it is an excuse which will always be accepted by the stewards when you’ve landed a touch with a horse which had previously shown no solid form.

September 9, 2010 at 15:01 #316704Just looking at a race at Sandown on Saturday and notice that Declan Carroll’s Whozthecat was gelded less than a fortnight before his last run when third at Southwell in May. He’s been off since then, so will be interesting to see how he gets on.
September 9, 2010 at 16:15 #316719Q. What do you get when you geld a slow horse?
A. A slow gelding.September 9, 2010 at 20:33 #316763Unless its name is Teleprompter.
