Let’s look at this legally….
If this man pressed the ‘self exclusion’ button and filled in all the relevant fields and then submitted his details….. then WH should have excluded him immediately.
If WH took bets from this guy, through the avenues that the client asked to be excluded from, then WH will be sued – simple as – and they won’t/shouldn’t have a leg to stand on.
William Hill’s self exclusion rules are simple, they are in line with all the gambling acts specified – so if WH chose to ignore his request, and only closed his account months later, then surely they must be made accountable.

February 15, 2008 at 08:37 #143381Simon Claire from Corals was on Radio 5 yesterday explaining that in the past ‘faces’ were filmed on the shop cctv systems and the images were passed around to other shops within the group to sound the alarm bells when a well known winning punter or a ‘slow payer’ on the greyhounds was in town.
Simon explained now under the Human Rights act bookmakers cannot take images of customers to use the way they did in the past.
They need to get permission of the person they wish to take an image of now.
So anyone who had asked to be restricted in shop A just has to go to shop B when thetemptation to gamble became to strong.February 15, 2008 at 10:51 #143419Much the biggest mystery to me is the claim that he was making £30,000 per month as a greyhound trainer.
His local track is Sunderland and the prize money there is £150 per race!
If you told me Paul Nicholls was making that much, I might just believe it, although I doubt if he does, but a greyhound trainer – not possible surely.

February 15, 2008 at 11:12 #143425I can’t see anyway on earth that he can win the case in the way he hopes to.
I’m not familiar with the laws / rules placed upon the betting industry but would expect that there will be some ruling that gives the business a fine for failings in their management controls
the points made previously about precedent being set and implications for other industries (alcohol, fast food etc) mean that it’s hard to believe that the legal system could allow him to abdicate responsibility for his own habit to others
the compensation culture in the UK hasn’t really been allowed to take off in the way the press claims it has, or the way it has in the US where people sue for almost anything to great effect in poorest areas (insurance companies don’t fight claims in certain areas because they get hammered every time they go to court – its seen as a way to get people off state dependency)
let’s hope that when they try to get him to go to rehab he doesn’t say NO NO NO!

Anyone who places cash bets of 30k, or walks about with carrier bags full of money, is likely to remain anonymous for all of the 30 seconds it takes him to ask for the bet.
How many shops would take such a bet without having a clue whom they were dealing with? None that I know of!February 15, 2008 at 12:20 #143456If the man was carrying round 30k in notes in bin bags then he should thank himself lucky he wasnt mugged.
February 21, 2008 at 09:56 #145250interesting to see calvert is on bail for firearms and drug charges
February 21, 2008 at 10:12 #145256These are appaerntly merely further misunderstandings.
Glock and Colt were supposed to exclude him from their respective websites, and he specifically asked Air Columbia to never sell him another ticket.
Poor bugger – everyone seems to have it in for him.
February 21, 2008 at 10:13 #145257Chloed how is that relevant to this case?
February 21, 2008 at 11:08 #145266relevant enough for the RP to publish it,spose it could be taken into consideration that he is a bit of an a****** .
February 21, 2008 at 11:32 #145267I see where you are coming from. Once the police charge he must be guilty. Don’t know why we bother with courts at all. "No Idea" convinced me of this in earlier threads.
February 21, 2008 at 13:01 #145282It would give a more convincing explanation as to where he got his £30k a month from other than training greyhounds.
February 21, 2008 at 13:50 #145295has anyone yet mentioned anything about taking responsibility for one’s own actions ?
this society is becoming more feeble and people are becoming less accountable – when people commit crime it’s not their fault they need help, fat people aren’t fat because they are gluttonous lazy people, nor are smokers and drinkers at fault for their ills either, its all the fault of society and the corporations for not protecting us from exercising free choice … right
he should be fined for making illegal bets after he had entered into a contract not to do so
then dealt with for the drugs and gun charges

I don’t think anyone is saying he is guilty because he was charged.
But you can’t deny it is more than just an interesting aside.
February 21, 2008 at 14:51 #145320why dont we blame the coverment for allowing gaming law. take them to court .and also the local council for giving permits to the bookmakers.if the courts have any sence they will throw it out .and we can all carry on with our normal lives
